PHARMACODYNAMICS: Calcium is one of the most abundant elements in
mammals. The majority is found concentrated in the cell. This element
exerts
an important biological action, mainly in the bone development,
nervous and
muscular system. Calcium is also essential in cardiac function, for
the
integrity of membranes cell and blood coagulation.
Magnesium is one of the most abundant cations in the intracellular
fluid. It is
essential in the activity of many enzyme systems, neurotransmission
and
muscle stimulation.
In certain physiological states such as growth, pregnancy, birth and
lactation,
the need of systemically available calcium increases above normal
level. If
the mobilization of calcium from endogenous reserves or feeding intake
are
limited, it can cause hypocalcemia. At the same time, there may be a
decrease in magnesium level in the blood, which can in turn cause
seizures.
This veterinary medicinal product contains calcium and magnesium in
the
form of magnesium chloride to treat hypocalcemia and hypomagnesia. In
addition, this product also contains butaphosphan, a tonic and
metabolic
stimulant, to support and maintain the rapid clinical response
tocalcium and
magnesium replacement therapy. Butaphosphane is an organic derivative
of
α-aminophosphoric acid. The exact mechanism of butaphosphane is
unknown.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
The
calcium
and
magnesium
salts
administered
intravenously are rapidly distributed in the whole body. As a result,
the
depleted reserves are filled up again. Excess quantities are
eliminated mainly
via the urine.
After intravenous injection, the pharmacokinetics of butaphosphane in
cattle
serum – including dairy cows - corresponding to a three-compartment
model.
After administration of 5.6 mg / kg body weight, the correspondi
