Date of revision WHAT GLIZID IS USED FOR For non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, where dietary management alone is insufficient. HOW GLIZID WORKS Gliclazide is for reducing sugar level in the blood. It stimulates the secretion of insulin by the pancreas. Gliclazide is only effective for patients whose pancreas is capable of producing insulin. Its use may improve the metabolic utilization of glucose in the body. BEFORE YOU USE GLIZID - _When you must not use it _ - If allergic to gliclazide or other ingredients of Glizid. - _Before you start to use it _ Check with doctor/pharmacist if you have: - liver or kidney problems. - insulin dependent diabetes mellitus(type1) - ketoacidosis (ketone bodies and sugar in urine) severe infections, stress, trauma, adrenal or thyroid dysfunction, pregnancy, diabetic pre-coma and coma (due to high level of sugar in blood) and sulphonylurea intolerance (allergy to certain antidiabetic medicines). - _Taking other medicines _ Check with doctor or pharmacist if using medications below: Reduction of effect of gliclazide by: - antibiotics (rifampicin, isoniazid) - thiazide diuretics (for urination) - adrenaline (hormone used for life threatening disorders) - chlorpromazine (for disorders of the central nervous system) - corticosteroids - cyclophosphamide (for cancer treatment) - diazoxide (for low blood sugar) - gemfibrozil (for reducing cholesterol) - hormones (oestrogens, oral contraceptive and thyroid hormones) - phenytoin (for seizures) Increased in effect of gliclazide by: - antibiotics (chloramphenicol, isoniazid, sulphonamides, mebendazole, tetracycline) - antifungals (fluconazole, miconazole) - medicines for reducing pain (s Lestu allt skjalið
