What DOXY tablets are used for Doxycycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic. This means it can be used to treat a wide range of organisms. Doxycycline belongs to a class of medicines called tetracyclines. These medicines work by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria which cause infection. They also work against parasites. It is used to treat infections of the: chest urethra womb rectum DOXY tablets may be used to aid medicines such as amoebicides (used to treat parasites). DOXY tablets may be used to aid medicines such as amoebicides (used to treat parasites). DOXY tablets may also be used to treat severe acne. DOXY tablets are only used to treat infections that will respond to it. Some infections are resistant to the effects of doxycycline. Your doctor may have prescribed DOXY tablets for another reason. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION Each Doxy-50 tablet contains doxycycline hydrochloride 57 mg (as hyclate, equivalent to doxycycline 50 mg) Each Doxy-100 tablet contains doxycycline hydrochloride 114 mg (as hyclate, equivalent to doxycycline 100 mg) EXCIPIENT(S) WITH KNOWN EFFECT For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1. 3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Doxy-50 and Doxy-100 tablets are white, film coated, circular biconvex tablet. DOXY-50 TABLETS have a diameter of approximately 6.3 mm. DOXY-100 TABLETS are scored on one side and have a diameter of 8 mm. 4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1. THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS Doxycycline is indicated in the treatment of uncomplicated chest, urethral, endocervical or rectal infections in adults caused by susceptible organisms (see below) as shown by culture and sensitivity testing. It may also be a useful adjunct to amoebicides in acute intestinal amoebiasis and has a place as adjunctive therapy in severe acne. Doxycycline is active against the following organisms: • _Rickettsiae_: rocky mountain spotted • Fever, typhus fever and the typhus group, Q fever, rickettsial pox, and tick fevers • _Mycoplasma pneumoniae _ • Agents of _lymphogranuloma venereum_ and _granuloma inguinale_ • The spirochetal agent of relapsing fever (_Borrelia recurrentis_) • _Chlamydia trachomatis _ • _Haemophilis ducreyi_ (chancroid) 2 | P a g e • _Pasteurella pestis_, and _Pasteurella tularensis_, _Bartonella bacilliformis_, _Bacteroids_ species, _Vibriocomma_ and Vibrio fetus and _Brucella_ species (in conjunction with an aminoglycoside) Doxycycline may be active against the following organisms although this should be confirmed by culture and sensitivity testing since many strains are resistant. • _Neisseria gonorrhoeae _ • _Escherichia coli _ • _Enterobacter aerogenes _ • _Shigella species _ • _Mima_ species and _Herellea_ species • _Haemophilis influenzae _ • _Klebsiella_ species • _ Lestu allt skjalið
