TABLETS ARE AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Trimethoprim belongs to a group of medicines called
anti-infectives: it is a broad spectrum agent which kills
a wide range of bacteria causing your symptoms.
Trimethoprim is used for the treatment of wide range of
infections caused by organisms that are susceptible to
Trimethoprim and particularly for the long term
prevention of recurring urinary tract infection. 2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE
YOU TAKE TRIMETHOPRIM 200MG
TABLETS
DO NOT TAKE Trimethoprim 200mg Tablets and tell your
doctor if you:
•
are allergic (hypersensitive) to trimethoprim or any of the
other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
•
have any BLOOD DISORDER
•
are PREGNANT
•
have SEVERE LIVER DISEASE
•
Trimethoprim should not be given to PREMATURE
BABIES or babies during the first few weeks of life.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking
Trimethoprim 200mg Tablets if you have:
•
KIDNEY disease or are having DIALYSIS TREATMENT
•
a DEFICIENCY OF FOLIC ACID (may cause anaemia).

CLINICAL PARTICULARS
4.1
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS
Treatment of susceptible infections caused by Trimethoprim sensitive
organisms
including most gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic organisms,
including
_Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella
pneumonia, _
_Staphylococcus aureus, Eschersichia coli, Enterobacter, Proteus _and
_Streptococcus _
_faecalis. _
Exceptions include anaerobic bacteria. _Mycobacterium tuberculosis,
Neisseria _
_gonorrhoeae, pseudomonas aeruginosa _and _Treponema pallidum. _
Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections.
Route of administration: Oral
Consideration should be given to official guidance on the appropriate
use of
antibacterial agents.
4.2
POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION

_Posology_
Acute infections_:_
Treatment should continue for a period of between three days (e.g.
uncomplicated
bacterial cystitis in women) and two weeks according to the nature and
severity of
infection. The first dose can be doubled.
•
_Adults and children over 12 years:_ 200mg twice daily.
•
_Children 6-12 years:_ 100mg twice daily.
•
_Children under 6 years of age:_ Not recommended; a more suitable
dosage form
should be used in this age group.
•
_Elderly: _Dosage is dependent upon kidney function; see special
dosage schedule.
Long-term treatment and prophylactic therapy_:_
•
_Adults and children over 12 years: _100mg at night._ _
•
_Children 6-12 years: _50mg at night. Where a single daily dose is
required, dosage
at bedtime may maximise urinary concentrations. The approximate dosage
in
children is 2mg trimethoprim per kg body weight per day._ _

_Elderly:_ Dosage is dependent upon kidney function; see special
