Adults (including the elderly) and children over 12 years of age:
Urinary tract infections and
Four 5 ml spoonfuls twice daily
other susceptible infections
Long-term prevention of
Two 5 ml spoonfuls at night
recurring urinary tract infections
Children 6 weeks to 12 years of age:
Urinary tract infections and
6 weeks - 5 months
2.5 ml (half a 5 ml spoonful) twice daily
other susceptible infections
6 months - 5 years
One 5 ml spoonful twice daily
6 years - 12 years
Two 5 ml spoonfuls twice daily
Long-term prevention of
6 months - 5 years
2.5 ml spoonful (half a 5 ml spoonful) at night
recurring urinary tract infections
6 years - 12 years
One 5 ml spoonful at night
Dialysis patients
Trimethoprim is removed by dialysis. Blood tests will be carried out
before and after dialysis.
If you forget to take Trimethoprim
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless its nearly time
for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the
missed dose.
If you take more Trimethoprim than you should
If you take too much Trimethoprim, go immediately to your nearest
hospital casualty department, taking your medicine bottle with you to
show what you have taken.
If you stop taking Trimethoprim
Remember to keep taking this medicine until your doctor tells you to
stop. Do not stop just because you feel better. If you stop too early,
your infection may
return, or get worse.
If you have any further questions on the use of Trimethoprim, ask your
doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not
everybody gets them.
Contact your doctor or hospital at once if you get an allergic
reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat,
difficulty

A white, opalescent, viscous suspension.
4. Clinical particulars
4.1 Therapeutic indications
Trimethoprim is indicated for the prevention and treatment of urinary
tract infections in adults and
children, and the treatment of other susceptible infections in adults
and children caused by a wide range
of trimethoprim sensitive Gm +ve and Gm -ve organisms including
_Haemophilus influenzae, _
_Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus
aureus, E.coli, Enterobacter, Proteus_
and _Streptococcus faecalis_.
4.2 Posology and method of administration
Method of administration
For oral administration
Posology
_Adults & Children over 12 years of age_
Treatment of urinary tract infections and all other susceptible
infections: 200 mg (20 ml) twice daily.
Long-term prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections: 100 mg (10
ml) at night.
_Children 6 weeks to 12 years of age_
Treatment of urinary tract infections is based on a dosage of 8 mg/kg
body weight daily, subdivided into
two equal doses. Suggested regimens are:
6 weeks - 5 months

25 mg (2.5 ml) twice daily
6 months - 5 years

50 mg (5 ml) twice daily
6 years - 12 years

100 mg (10 ml) twice daily
Long-term prevention of recurrent urinary tract infection is based on
2 mg/kg body weight daily given as
a single dose at night. Suggested regimens are:
6 months - 5 years

50 mg (5 ml) at night
