ZITROCIN ® TABLETS _Azithromycin (a-zithro-my-sin)_ CONSUMER MEDICINE INFORMATION WHAT IS IN THIS LEAFLET This leaflet answers some common questions about Zitrocin. It does not contain all the available information. It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. All medicines have risks and benefits. KEEP THIS LEAFLET WITH YOUR MEDICINE. You may need to read it again. WHAT ZITROCIN IS USED FOR Zitrocin is used to treat infections in different parts of the body caused by bacteria. It is commonly used to treat Chlamydia. Zitrocin is also used to prevent infections by a bacterium called Mycobacterium avium- intracellulare Complex (MAC) in some people. Zitrocin is an antibiotic, which belongs to a group of medicines called azalides. The azalides are a sub-class of a group of antibiotics called macrolides. Zitrocin works by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria causing your infection. Zitrocin will not work against viral infections such as colds or flu. ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY ZITROCIN HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU. Your doctor may have prescribed it for another reason. Zitrocin is only available with a doctor's prescription. This medicine is not addictive. This medicine is not expected to affect your ability to drive a car or operate machinery. BEFORE YOU TAKE ZITROCIN _WHEN YOU MUST NOT TAKE IT_ DO NOT TAKE ZITROCIN IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO: • azithromycin • any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, roxithromycin, telithromycin) • any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body; rash, itching or hives on the skin. Version: pfpzitra10613 Supersedes: pfpzitra10812 Page 1 of 19 PRODUCT INFORMATION ZITROCIN ® (azithromycin dihydrate tablets and powder for oral suspension) NAME OF THE MEDICINE Azithromycin is the first of a new class of antibiotics designated chemically as azalides, a subclass of macrolides, available for oral administration. Azithromycin, chemically 9-deoxo- 9a-aza-9a-methyl-9a-homoerythromycin A, contains a methyl substituted nitrogen atom at position 9A of the lactone ring. The structural formula is: CAS:83905-01-5 Azithromycin dihydrate is a white crystalline powder with a chemical formula of C 38 H 72 N 2 O 12 .2H 2 0 and a molecular weight of 785.0. DESCRIPTION ZITROCIN is supplied as: 1. White capsular shaped film-coated tablets containing azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 500 mg or 600 mg of azithromycin and the following inactive ingredients: starch- pregelatinised maize, calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, croscarmellose sodium, Version: pfpzitra10613 Supersedes: pfpzitra10812 Page 2 of 19 magnesium stearate and sodium lauryl sulfate. The coating of the tablets contains lactose, hypromellose, titanium dioxide and glycerol triacetate. 2. A white powder for oral suspension containing azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 200 mg of azithromycin per 5 mL of suspension, when reconstituted. It has the following inactive ingredients: sucrose, sodium phosphate-tribasic anhydrous, hydroxypropylcellulose, xanthan gum, cherry flavour, banana flavour and vanilla flavour.
