DESCRIPTION

PHARMACODYNAMIC
Monensin
is
an
ionophore
antibiotic
derived
from _Streptomyces_ that
forms
complexes
with
monovalent
cations,
including
sodium
and
potassium.
The
complexes
are
transported
in
a
nonpolar
manner
across
the
bacterial
cell
membrane. As such, it acts as an Na+/H+ antiporter. Monensin
blocks intracellular protein transport, resulting in antibacterial
and antimalarial effects. Monensin also increases the production
of propionic acid and thus prevents bloat.
PHARMACOKINETIC
Ionophores are absorbed orally. They are rapidly and extensively
metabolized by the liver and the numerous metabolites are
excreted by bile and eliminated in the feces
TARGET SPECIES
Broiler Chickens
INDICATION
As an aid in the prevention of coccidiosis caused by _Eimeria _
_acervulina_, _E. mitis_, _E. necatrix_, _E. maxima_, _E. tenella_,
and _E. _
_brunetti_ in broiler chickens.
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
For oral administration
RECOMMENDED DOSE
Important - must be thoroughly mixed in feeds before use.
BROILER CHICKENS:
Thoroughly mix 500 g (0.50 kg) of PF MONENSIN PREMIX 20%
W/W GRANULE in one metric tonne (1000 kg) of feed to provide
monensin at 100 g monensin activity per metric tonne of feed. It
is recommended that MONENSIN PREMIX 20% W/W GRANULE be
mixed with a small quantity of one of the feed ingredients before
it is incorporated in the finished feed.
