Contents of the pack and other information 1 WHAT BECONASE IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray (called ‘Beconase’ in this leaflet) contains a medicine called beclometasone dipropionate. This belongs to a group of medicines called steroids (also called ‘cortico-steroids’). • steroids work by reducing inflammation • they reduce swelling and irritation in your nose • this helps to relieve itching, sneezing and your blocked or runny nose. SUMMARY OF PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS 1. NAME OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray 2. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION Beclometasone Dipropionate 50 µg (as monohydrate, micronised) Excipient with known effect: Benzalkonium Chloride For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1 3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Aqueous suspension for intranasal inhalation via metered dose atomising pump. 4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis including hayfever, and vasomotor rhinitis. Beclometasone dipropionate has a potent anti-inflammatory effect within the respiratory tract, with a lower incidence and severity of adverse events than those observed when corticosteroids are administered systemically. 4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray is for administration by the intranasal route only. Adults and children over six years of age: The recommended dosage is two sprays into each nostril twice daily (400 micrograms/day). Once control has been established it may be possible to maintain control with fewer sprays. A dosage regimen of one spray into each nostril morning and evening has been shown to be efficacious in some patients. However, should symptoms recur, patients should revert to the recommended dosage of two sprays into each nostril morning and evening. The minimum dose should be used at which effective control of symptoms is Page 1 of 7 maintained. Total daily administration should not normally exceed eight sprays.
