DESCRIPTION: A white ointment containing 2.0% w/w Mupirocin.
PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to
isoleucyl-transfer
RNA synthetase. Due to this particular mode of action and its unique
molecular structure,
Mupirocin
does not show any cross-resistance with other antibiotics. It is
mainly active against Gram-positive
aerobes,
most
strains
of
staphylococci
including
methicillin-resistant
and
multiple
resistant
staphylococcus aureus and streptococci. lt is also active against some
Gram-negative bacterium.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
Mupirocin
is
rapidly
inactivated
after
absorption
and
its
systemic
level
is
undetectable.
Virtually no systemic absorption (
< 1.1 nanograms per mL of whole blood ) following
application to lower arm of normal males with occlusion for 24 hours.
INDICATIONS: Bacterial skin infections.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity to Mupirocin, polyethylene glycol
or any other constituent in the
ointment base.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Unknown.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Mupirocin is usually well tolerated but local
reactions such as burning, stinging and
itching may occur after the application of Mupirocin to the skin.
Muprin Ointment has not been reported
to cause contact sensitization or photosensitivity reactions. The
polyethylene glycol vehicle in Muprin
Ointment may irritate broken skin or mucous membranes. Muprin Ointment
may cause some unwanted
effects. The following side effects may go away during treatment as
your body adjusts to the medicine.
However, check with your doctor if any of these persist or are
bothersome.
Less frequently reported unwanted effects include dry skin; skin
burning, itching, pain, rash, redness,
stinging or swelling; headache; nausea.
Rarely reported are abdominal pain; dizziness; secondary wound
infection; ulcerative stomatitis ( sores in
mouth or on lips ).
PRECAUTIONS/WARNINGS:
Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use. Avoid contact with eyes: use
with
caution if there is evidence of moderate or severe renal impairment.
