SHUTOUT
®
INTERNAL TEAT SEALANT
DESCRIPTION
A white to slightly yellow paste. Each 4 gram syringe contains 2.6 g
Bismuth subnitrate in an
oily base.
INDICATIONS
SHUTOUT is indicated for the prevention of mastitis during the
non-lactating (dry) period:
•
in lactating heifers (first calvers) and cows with somatic cell counts
(SCC) of less than
120,000 and 150,000 respectively.
•
in cows and heifers with a higher somatic cell count (SCC),
immediately following
treatment with appropriate antibiotic dry cow therapy.
SHUTOUT is also indicated for the prevention of peri-calving mastitis
in maiden heifers.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Selection of cows for treatment with SHUTOUT should be based on
veterinary clinical
judgement. Selection criteria may be based on the mastitis and cell
count history of
individual cows, or recognised tests for the detection of sub-clinical
mastitis or bacteriological
sampling. As a guide, where individual cell counts are available,
lactating heifers and cows
with an average cell count less than 120,000 and 150,000 cells/mL
respectively may be
given SHUTOUT without an accompanying antibiotic dry cow therapy.
MAIDEN HEIFERS (FIRST CALVERS): Administer SHUTOUT approximately 4
weeks prior to
calving to reduce the risk of post-calving mastitis. It is not
recommended to administer
SHUTOUT closer than one week prior to calving.
USE IN COMBINATION WITH ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY: In cows that have
sub-clinical mastitis,
SHUTOUT may be used immediately following administration of a suitable
dry cow antibiotic
treatment to the infected quarter such as CEPRAVIN DRY COW (A003322)
or CEFA-SAFE
(A007158). The dry cow antibiotic should be administered in accordance
with the product
label and massaged into the quarter. Following administration,
re-disinfect the teat and
infuse SHUTOUT as recommended below. After SHUTOUT inf
