It does not contain all the available information and it does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. All medicines have risks and benefits. Your doctor or pharmacist has weighed the risks of you being treated with this medicine against the benefits it is expected to have for you. Please read this leaflet carefully and follow the instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist, and the advice contained in this leaflet. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT BEING TREATED WITH THIS MEDICINE, ASK YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST. KEEP THIS LEAFLET. You may need to read it again. WHAT JUNALOX IS USED FOR Naloxone hydrochloride dihydrate belongs to a group of medicines called opioid antagonists. Naloxone hydrochloride dihydrate works by reversing the effects of opium-like substances such as morphine, heroin and codeine. Your doctor or pharmacist may have prescribed this medicine for another reason. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about why this medicine has been prescribed for you. This medicine is available from your pharmacist. BEFORE YOU ARE GIVEN JUNALOX _WHEN JUNALOX MUST NOT BE _ _GIVEN_ YOU SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN THIS MEDICINE IF YOU HAVE AN ALLERGY TO: • Any medicine containing naloxone hydrochloride dihydrate • Any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include: • Shortness of breath • Wheezing or difficulty breathing • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body • Rash, itching or hives on the skin. YOU SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN THIS MEDICINE IF THE SOLUTION IS DISCOLOURED OR CLOUDY, TURBID OR A PRECIPITATE IS PRESENT. The injection is normally a clear and colourless solution, practically free from visible particles. CHECK FOR DANGER Needles, sharp objects, bystanders etc. Make sure the environment is safe CHECK FOR RESPONSE Call the person’s name. Shake their shoulders vigorously or rub their chest with your knuckles OVERDOSE ACTION PLAN IF THEY ARE NOT BREATHING or their breathing is slow or abnormal Put them on their back, clear and open their airway, pinch their nose and give two rescue breaths GIVE NALOXONE. SEE OVERLEAF FOR PREPARING INJECTION NALOXONE WON’T HARM A PERSON, AND IT MAY SAVE THEIR LIFE OPIOID OVERDOSE ACTION PLAN Inject the entire contents into muscle of the upper arm or thigh and even through clothing in an emergency NOTE THE TIME GIVEN, IF THEY ARE BREATHING NORMALLY Put them in the recovery position and monitor them until help arrives. Ensure that their airway is clear and open CLEAR THE PERSON’S AIRWAY Check their breathing Watch for their chest rising Look, listen and feel for 2 breaths in 10 seconds. If there is no response, or poor response, SEND FOR HELP Dial 000 and ask for an ambulance 000 If still no response, commence CPR 30 compressions, then 2 breaths; repeat If the person is breathing normally, then put them in the recovery position and monitor them. Ensure that their airway is clear and open. IF THERE IS NO RESPONSE Inject another dose of Naloxone in 2–5 minutes. NOTE THE TIME GIVEN, CONTINUE RESCUE BREATHING If you are worried give another dose at any time. HOW TO RESPOND TO SOMEONE WHO HAS OVERDOSED ON HEROIN OR OTHER OPIOIDS SIGNS OF OVERDOSE Not responding Shallow or no breathing Blue lips or fingernails Snoring or gurgling Produced by Angelo Pricolo to any of the signs above proceed to the Action Plan YES IF THEY ARE STILL NOT BREATHING NORMALLY Continue rescue breathing—1 breath every 5 seconds OVERDOSE ACTION PLAN Remove naloxone ampoule tray from pack. Snap ampoule open by breaking the top of the ampoule at the white ring.
