WHAT SCMC SYRUP IS USED
FOR
This medicine is used to reduce
phlegm
thickness,
thus
facilitate
its
removal
by
coughing.
HOW SCMC SYRUP WORKS
SCMC
Syrup
contains
Carbocisteine
as
active
ingredient.
It
works
by
loosening the phlegm so that it
can be coughed out easily.
BEFORE YOU USE SCMC SYRUP

_When you must not take it _
Do not take SCMC Syrup if
you have:
- an allergy to Carbocisteine or
any of the ingredients listed at
the end of this leaflet.
- active ulcer
Do not take this medicine after
the expiry date that is printed
on the pack or if the packaging
is
torn
or
shows
signs
of
tampering. If it has expired or
is damaged, return it to your
pharmacist for disposal.
If you are not sure whether you
should
start
taking
this
medicine, talk to your doctor.

_Before you start to use it _
Tell your doctor if you have

allergies
to
any
other
medicines, foods, preservatives
or dyes
- history of gastric or duodenal
ulcer.

_Taking other medicines _
Tell your doctor or pharmacist
if
you
are
taking
any
other
medicines, including any that
you get without a prescription
from
your
pharmacy,
supermarket
or
health
food
shop.
Some
medicines
and
SCMC
Syrup may interfere with each
other.

carefully. They

Children 2 – 5 years old:
2.5ml to 5ml four times daily
Children 5 – 12 years old:
10ml three times daily

250mg/5ml contains S-carboxymethylcysteine, an
active mucolytic agent. It is suitable for wet cough
where there is excessive phlegm present. It loosens
phlegm so that it can be coughed out easily.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Syrup
250mg/5ml:
A yellow, fruity flavoured homogeneous syrup.
PHARMACODYNAMICS:
S-carboxymethylcysteine
is
an
active
mucolytic
agent.
It
dissolves
mucus
plugs,
relieves
tracheo-bronchial
congestion
and
improves
respiration thus facilitating expectoration.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
S-carboxymethylcysteine
is
absorbed
from
the
gastro-intestinal
tract
excreted
in
the
urine
as
unchanged drug and metabolites.
INDICATION:
Reduction
of
sputum
viscosity
to
facilitate
expectoration and evacuation.
DOSAGE:
SCMC Syrup 125mg/5ml:
Children 2-5 years: 2.5 - 5ml four times daily. 5-12
years: 10ml thrice daily.
SCMC Plus Syrup 250mg/5ml:
Adult and children above 12 years: 15ml three times
daily.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, headache, gastric discomfort, diarrhoea,
gastro-intestinal
bleeding,
and
skin
rash
have
occasionally occured with S-carboxymethylcysteine.
IMMUNE SYSTEM DISORDERS
Anaphylactic / anaphylactoid reaction.
SKIN AND SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE DISORDERS
Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) e.g.
erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome

(SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). In most
of these cases reported at least one other drug was
administered at the same time, which may have
possibly enhanced the described mucocutaneous
effects.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS:
It is recommended that S-carboxymethylcysteine be
used with caution in patients with a history of peptic
ulcer
and
be
avoided
in
patients
with
active
ulceration.
SCMC
SYRUP
may
cause
severe
allergy
and
serious skin reactions. Stop using SCMC SYRUP and
seek medical assistance immed
