Serial number WHAT BETALOC IS USED FOR BETALOC is used against: • high blood pressure and to prevent coronary heart disease (angina pectoris) • Some rapid heart beat symptoms • Some disturbances of heart rate (arrhythmia) • Increased metabolic rate (thyrotoxicosis). BETALOC reduces the risk for death and of developing another heart attack in patients who had a heart attack. BETALOC can also be given as preventive treatment of migraine. HOW BETALOC WORKS Metoprolol reduces the effect of stress hormones in the heart in connection with physical or mental effort. It makes the heart beat slower (reduces pulse) in these situations. The reduced cardiac work also prevents onset of angina. BEFORE YOU TAKE BETALOC _When you must not take it: _ Do not use BETALOC if you have: • untreated heart failure • serious heart block and/or very low pulse • very low blood pressure. Do not use BETALOC if you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients or to other similar drugs (beta-receptor blocking drugs) _Before you start to take it _ Talk to your doctor before you start taking BETALOC if you have any of the following diseases: • asthma • severe symptoms of narrow airways • Serious problems with metabolism (metabolic acidosis) • Prinzmetal’s angina • Severely impaired kidney function If you suffer from impaired blood circulation, in your hands, feet, arms or legs (claudication), symptoms may worsen from the BETALOC medication. _Taking other medicines _ Tell your doctor if you are using other medicines when taking BETALOC. 1 Betaloc Tablet Metoprolol tartrate Composition 1 tablet contains : 50 and 100 mg metoprolol tartrate respectively. For a complete list of excipients , see List of excipients . Pharmaceutical form Tablet . 50 mg tablet s: W hite , round with a diameter of 8 mm , bisected , marked A/BB . The score mark is not intended to divide the tablet into two equal doses. It is only to facilitate swallowing . 100 mg tablet s: W hite , round with a diameter of 10 mm , bisected, mark ed A/ M E. The tablet can be divided into two equal doses . Therapeutic indication s Hypertension : to reduce blood pressure and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular and coronary mortality (including sudden death) , and morbidity. Angina pectoris. Disturbances of cardiac rhythm including especially supraventricular tachycardia. Confirmed or suspected m yocardial infarction - prevention of cardiac death and reinfarction. Functional heart disorders with palpitations. Migraine prophylaxis . Hyperthyroidism. Posology and Method of Administration Dosage should be adjusted individually to avoid bradycardia. The tablets should be taken on an empty stomach. Concomitant intake of food increases the bioavailability of metoprolol with 40 %. The following is valid as guidelines: Hypertension 100 -200 mg daily divided on one or two occasions. The table ts should be taken in the morning if once -daily dosage. In patients not responding to 200 mg, the dose could be combined with other antihypertensive agents, preferably diuretics and calcium antagonists of the dihydropyridine type, or increased.
