A dedicated automatic cycling device used to control and assist alveolar ventilation, with sufficient functions to provide long-term ventilatory support for neonatal/paediatric patients with varying respiratory demands. The design of the device will make it especially favourible for ventilation of premature newborn and unsuitable for use on children or adults. It will typically have pressure cycled modes and allow for spontaneous breathing while providing for a minimum minute volume in the event of patient apnoea. It will have monitors and alarms specifically designed this intensive care setting.
