Date of Revision WHAT DHAMOL IS USED FOR Dhamol is used to relieve mild to moderate pain, for example in period pain, toothache or headache. It is also useful for lowering a raised temperature. HOW DHAMOL WORK Dhamol contains paracetamol which belongs to the group of medicines known as analgesics or painkillers. BEFORE YOU USE DHAMOL_ _ _-When you must not take it _ Do not take Dhamol if: • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to paracetamol and any of the other ingredients in the tablets • you have liver or kidney problems. • you take any other paracetamol containing medicines at the same times. _-Before you start to take it _ You should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Dhamol if: • you are pregnant or breastfeeding • have impaired kidney or liver function. If you are not sure if any of the above applies to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Dhamol. _-Taking other medicines_ Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This includes: -metoclopramide, used to treat nausea and vomiting. -probenecid, used for treating gout HOW TO TAKE DHAMOL _-How much to take _ Shake the suspension well before use. Children under 3 months: 5 -10 mg/kg of body weight or on doctor’s advice, Children 3months - 1 year: 1.25 - 2.5ml Children 1 - 6 years: 2.5 - 5 ml Children 6 - 12 years: 5 - 10 ml. These doses may be given 4 to 6 hourly when necessary. Maximum: Not more than 4 doses daily. _-When to take it _ Take Dhamol at the same time every day. DHAMOL PRESENTATION: DHAMOL SUSPENSION : Paracetamol BP (fine powder) 250 mg/5 ml PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Homogenous pink suspension with strawberry flavour and sweet taste. PHARMACOLOGY: Paracetamol has analgesic and antipyretic effects. It inhibits the prostaglandin synthesis in the brain to relieve pains of moderate intensity, such as headache, dysmenorrhoea, pain in muscle and nerve disorders. It reduces fever by a direct effect on the heat-regulating centre to increase dissipation of body heat. PHARMACOKINETIC: It is rapidly and completely absorbed from the G.I.T. and metabolised in the liver. The hydroxylated metabolites are responsible for methemoglobin formation and hepatotoxicity. About 3% of the absorbed paracetamol is excreted unchanged in the urine and about 80% in conjugated forms. INDICATIONS: For relief of fever and pain of moderate intensity e.g. headache, dysmenorrhoea and toothache. RECOMMENDED DOSAGE: ORALLY Children: Under 3 months : 5-10 mg/kg of body weight or on doctor’s advice 3 months - 1 year : 1.25 - 2.5 ml, 1 - 6 years : 2.5 - 5 ml, 6 - 12 years : 5 - 10 ml. These doses may be given 4 to 6 hourly when necessary. (Maximum: Not more than 4 doses daily). ADVERSE EFFECT/UNDESIRABLE EFFECT: Cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, angioedema, Stevens Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis have been reported. Side effects of paracetamol are usually mild; skin rashes and allergic reactions occur occasionally. PRECAUTIONS/WARNINGS: This preparation contains PARACETAMOL. Do not take any other PARACETAMOL containing medicines at the same time. ALLERGY ALERT: Paracetamol may cause severe skin reactions. Symptoms may include skin reddening, blisters or rash. These could be signs of a serious condition. If these reactions occur, stop use and seek medical assistance right away. Inappropriate use of product containing paracetamol can result in liver toxicity or severe liver damage. Do not exceed the stated dose.
