image-based arthritis-assessment software

havapp pty ltd - 66340 - image-based arthritis-assessment software - this device is a smartphone application to assist general practitioners (gps), in screening patients presenting with hand arthritis. it combines machine learning algorithms applied to a photographic image of the patient?s hands, a series of 9 questions regarding symptoms, and a single examination result. it has been tested and validated in published clinical studies, and can help to discriminate between osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, or a combination of these conditions. it is not intended to be used as a stand-alone diagnostic tool, but rather to produce a screening result. this is to be used in conjunction with clinical and investigation findings, to assist the gp in determining the most likely cause for a patient?s symptoms. the diagnostic decision of the gp is not dependent on the screening result produced by this device, although it has been demonstrated to provide valid information regarding symptom causation, which can be combined with other clinical features (history, examination), and investigation (blood test, imaging) results. it is hoped that the use of this device will help the current clinical approach for patients with these conditions, which are often affected by limited understanding of typical presenting symptoms in primary care settings. we have assessed the application with the tga classification tool, which determined that it falls in the class i category. it is non-invasive, non-sterile, and does not have a measuring function. it is a programmed (active) medical device designed for use solely by the relevant health care professional (gp). as outlined above, it does not provide a diagnosis for patients presenting with hand arthritis, but rather a screening result, which can prompt the gp to order further tests or specialist referral, in conjunction with other clinical information.
