INTRODUCTION:
Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) is an acute,
highly infectious and usually fatal condition which
affects only European rabbits _Oryctolagus_
_ _
_cuniculus_. All breeds of rabbits in Australia and
New Zealand are derived from _Oryctolagus_
_ _
_cuniculus _and are therefore potentially
susceptible
to infection with rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus
(RHDV1).
A vaccine to protect pet and farmed rabbits from
RHDV1 is available from your local veterinarian. In
order to avoid the unnecessary infection and possibly
death of farmed and pet rabbits, the public and rabbit
farmers should be made aware of the proposed use
of
RHDV1 K5, for instance through some form of
public
and targeted notification, so that they can
vaccinate
rabbits that could be exposed to RHDV1.
