ORABASE PROTECTIVE PASTE ConvaTec SCHEDULING STATUS (Not Scheduled) PROPRIETARY NAME (and dosage form) ORABASE PROTECTIVE PASTE COMPOSITION Orabase is composed of gelatin , pectin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose in Plastibase (plasticised hydrocarbon gel). PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION Category A 13.4.2 Other Dermatological Preparations. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION By virtue of its superior adhesive properties ORABASE paste adheres tenaciously and remains in intimate contact with mucous membranes of the mouth and gums, protecting the afflicted area in the mouth against further irritation from chewing, swallowing and other normal mouth activity. It acts like an invisible bandage. ORABASE Paste adheres to the skin around ileostomies, fistulas and colostomies and used in conjunction with Stomahesive wafers, protects the peristomal skin against excoriation, and allows excoriated skin to heal. INDICATIONS To protect and soothe any sore and painful areas in the mouth or on the gums, including ulcers, sore spots from dentures, and toothbrush injury. To protect the skin around ileostomies, colostomies, fistulas and ileal conduits. CONTRA-INDICATIONS ORABASE Paste is non-irritating and harmless when swallowed. There are no contraindications. DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE Mucous membranes of the mouth: Take a small dab of ORABASE Paste and coat the involved area of the mouth with a thin film. Hold in position until it becomes sticky. Do not attempt to rub it in. Use as often as needed for continuous relief particularly after eating, or use as directed by a dentist or physician. NOTE: If applied too thickly in the mouth the excess simply peels off leaving a thin film in contact with the sore spot.
