KEEP THIS LEAFLET IN A SAFE PLACE. You may need to read it again. WHAT GLUCOSE 50% IS USED FOR Glucose is a sugar which provides energy for the body. Glucose 50% is used to treat low blood sugar levels. It may also be: • added to intravenous solutions as a source of calories for patients unable to consume food. • used to treat pressure on the brain and spinal chord and/or swelling of the body caused from consuming too much alcohol. ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY GLUCOSE 50% HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU. Your doctor may have prescribed it for another reason. PRODUCT INFORMATION GLUCOSE 50% ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Product Information Glucose 50% Page 1 of 4 Version 10 GLUCOSE 50% Intravenous infusion 25 g in 50 mL NAME OF THE MEDICINE Glucose Chemical Name: monohydrate of (+)-D-glucopyranose. The molecular weight of the compound is 198.2 and the CAS registry number is 5996-10-1. The molecular formula is C 6 H 12 O 6 ,H 2 O. Structural formula: DESCRIPTION GLUCOSE 50% is a clear, colourless to faintly straw coloured, particle-free, sterile solution of anhydrous glucose in water for injections, adjusted to pH 3.5-6.5 with sodium bicarbonate or hydrochloric acid. GLUCOSE 50% is strongly hypertonic. PHARMACOLOGY Glucose is a monosaccharide which provides the principal source of energy for the body. It is also involved in many additional areas of protein and fat metabolism. Glucose is stored in the body as fat and in the muscles and liver as glycogen. Glucose is rapidly metabolised from glycogen; it increases blood glucose concentrations and provides energy. However, when this supply is insufficient the body mobilises its fat stores to release energy. Glucose may also decrease body protein and nitrogen losses, promote glycogen deposition. Glucose is metabolised to carbon dioxide and water thus providing water for body hydration as well as calories.
