The TWA exposure value is the average airborne concentrationof aparticular substance when calculatedover a normal 8 hourworking dayfor a 5

dayworkingweek. The STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) isan exposure value thatshould notbe exceeded for morethan 15 minutes andshould

not be repeated for more than 4 times per day. There should be atleast 60 minutes between successive exposures atthe STEL. The term "peak "is

used when theTWA limit, because of the rapid action of the substance, should neverbe exceeded, even briefly.

Section 11- Toxicological Information

Toxicity: Brodifacoum isa bromylatedhydroxycoumarin derivative; an indirect anti-coagulant; and an effective

stomach poison which inhibits prothrombin formation and inducescapillary damage. To be effective it usually requires

only a single ingestion of a bait formationin one feedingto producea kill. It is extremely toxic to a broadspectrum of

rodents and other small mammals but due to its low bait concentration and its delayed effect it is consideredto be

only of low acute toxicity hazard to humans. Brodifacoumactsthrough the interruption of the vitamin K1-epoxide

cycle, preventing vitamin K activation rather than depleting its bodyreserves.

The anticoagulant effect of Brodifacoummay lastfor more than7 weeks in the poisoned patient.

Ingestionof Brodifacoumis initially asymptomatic, andmay continueas such even with prolonged alterations in

prothrombin time. No gastrointestinal tract or othersymptomology occurs. Coagulation disturbances may become

evident a few days after ingestion, andmay be detected only by laboratory studies. In severepoisoning, gum-

bleeding, epistaxis, petechiae, ecchymoses, haematomata, blood inurine and faeces, and genital haemorrhage may

occur. Internalbleeding andcerebral haemorrhage may complicatethe patient'sprognosis.

The course ofpoisoning ischaracteristically long. Alterations of coagulation parameters andclinicalsymptoms of

bleeding maybe maintainedfor severaldays if no treatment isprovided. The prognosis is poor in cases with internal

bleeding or intracerebral haemorrhage, and also in patients with previoushaematological illnesses or renal

insufficiency. Death however, is uncommon.

Section 12 - Ecological Information

This product isbiodegradable. It will notaccumulate in the soil orwater orcause long term problems.

Brodifacoumdoes not enter the atmosphere, becauseof its low volatility. Itis practically insoluble in water.

Brodifacoum isstrongly bound onsoil particles and is not takenupby plants. The rate of degradation isrelatively slow

and dependson soil type. Residues incrops have never been detected in field studies.

Brodifacoum isnot intendedfor direct application to growing crops or for use asa food additive. No information is

available onconcentrations in air, water, and soil. Residues of Brodifacoumweredetected in dead barn owlsin the

United Kingdom at levels of 0.019-0.515mg/kg. Brodifacoum residues were also found in the liver, muscle, and fatty

tissues of rabbits, intentionally poisonedduring field trials with baitscontaining 0.005% active ingredient, at

concentrationsof 4.4, 0.26, and 0.86 mg/kg, respectively.

The solubility of Brodifacoum in water islow and, in baitformulation, its use is unlikely to be a source of water

pollution. Asa technical material, it is highly toxic for fish. Brodifacoum appearsto bind rapidly in the soil with very

slowdesorption andwithout leaching. Non-target organisms are potentially at risk in two ways: from direct

consumptionof baits (primary hazard) and through eating poisonedrodents (secondary hazard).

Bird speciesvary in their susceptibility to Brodifacoum. The mainreason for the poisoningof domestic animals is

direct consumption of Brodifacoum baits. Brodifacoumshowsasimilar range ofacute toxicity for non-targetand target

mammals. The primary hazard is usually expressed bythe amount offinished baitthat must be consumed to

approach thelethal dose. Some secondary toxicity laboratory studieson wildlife have shown that captive predators

could be intoxicated by the no-choice feedingof Brodifacoum-poisoned or dosed prey. Thesignificance ofthese

results in terms of hazard under field conditions is difficultto assess, because the predators would not be expected to

eat only poisoned animals. However, predators may take poisoned, but not dead, small mammals preferentially. In

areas close to baiting, poisoned rodents may represent a high proportion of thediet for individual birds. However, only

few individuals will be affected, unless there has beenvery widespread and constant use of the baits.

Section 13 - Disposal Considerations

Disposal:Instructionsconcerningthe disposal of this product andits containers are given onthe productlabel.

These shouldbe carefully followed. Special help is availablefor thedisposal of Agricultural Chemicals. Theproduct

label will givegeneral advice regarding disposal of smallquantities, and how tocleansecontainers. However, for help

with the collection of unwanted rural chemicals, contact ChemClear 1800 008 182 http://www.chemclear.com.au/ and

for help with the disposal ofempty drums, contact DrumMuster http://www.drummuster.com.au/ where you will find

contact detailsfor your area.
