SAFETY TO HORSES

Horses of all ages, including pregnant mares and breeding stallions, may be

treated provided normal care is taken in handling.

MODE OF ACTION

EQUIMEC Liquid contains ivermectin. Ivermectin is a member of the

macrocyclic lactone family of compounds which have a unique mode of

action unrelated to other products used to control parasites of horses in

Australia.

DISPOSAL

Triple rinse the empty container with water and add rinsings to the last dose.

Do not dispose of undiluted chemical on-site.

Dispose of empty containers by wrapping in paper and putting in garbage.

PROTECTION OF FISH, CRUSTACEANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Studies indicate that when ivermectin comes in contact with the soil it readily

and tightly binds to the soil and becomes inactive over time. Containers and

any residual contents should be disposed of safely in an approved landfill as

free ivermectin may adversely affect fish and certain water-borne organisms.

DO NOT CONTAMINATE DAMS, RIVERS OR STREAMS.

EQUIMEC

®

(ivermectin) Liquid

Broad Spectrum Parasite Control Agent for Horses

INTRODUCTION

EQUIMEC® (ivermectin) Liquid has been formulated for administration by

oral drench or stomach tube (nasogastric intubation). One low-volume dose

is effective against important internal parasites, including the arterial stages

of Strongylus vulgaris, and bots.

Ivermectin is a potent antiparasitic agent. Its convenience, broad-spectrum

efficacy and safety margin make EQUIMEC Liquid an ideal parasite control

product for horses.

Ivermectin is derived from the avermectins, a family of potent, broad-

spectrum antiparasitic agents, which are isolated from fermentation of

Streptomyces avermitilis.

MODE OF ACTION

EQUIMEC is a member of the macrocyclic lactone class of endectocides

which have a unique mode of action. Compounds of the class bind

selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels

which occur in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This leads to an

increase in the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions with

hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cell, resulting in paralysis and death

of the parasite. Compounds of this class may also interact with other ligand-

gated chloride channels, such as those gated by the neurotransmitter

gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

The margin of safety for compounds of this class is attributable to the fact

that mammals do not have glutamate-gated chloride channels; the

macrocyclic lactones have a low affinity for other mammalian ligand-gated

chloride channels and they do not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

The recommended dose is 1mL EQUIMEC Liquid per 50kg liveweight

(equivalent to 200µg ivermectin per kilogram liveweight). EQUIMEC Liquid

can be given as an oral drench or by stomach tube (nasogastric intubation).

Administration as an oral drench: For administration by this method, an

undiluted dose is usually preferred. Clear the horse’s mouth of any food

material, elevate the horse’s head, and using a suitable dosing syringe,

deposit the appropriate dose in the back of the mouth. In order to avoid

unnecessary coughing or the potential for material to enter the trachea and

lungs, do not use excessive pressure, do not use a large dose volume of

diluted EQUIMEC Liquid, and do not deposit the dose in the laryngeal area.

Increased dose rejection may occur if the dose is depostied in the front of the

mouth. Keep the horse’s head elevated and observe the horse to ensure the

dose is retained.

Administration by stomach tube (gravity or positive flow) :

Drenching

horses by nasogastric intubation requires specialized skills and knowledge.

Special consideration should be given to the effects of potential for injury

from handling, restraint and placement of the tube during administration by

stomach tube. Nasogastric intubation should only be done by a

veterinarian or under veterinary supervision.

The recommended dose can be used undiluted or diluted up to

approximately 40 times with clean tepid water. Use tepid water to flush any

drug remaining in the tube into the horse's stomach. Pour the EQUIMEC

Liquid into a graduated cylinder for dose measurement. Alternatively use a

calibrated dosing syringe inserted into the bottle to measure the appropriate

dose. Use a clean, dry syringe if accessing the bottle to avoid contaminating

the remaining product.

EQUIMEC Liquid in 1 to 20 and 1 to 40 dilutions with tap water has been

shown to be stable for 72 hours under the conditions recommended for the

product (i.e. at room temperature, in a tightly closed container, protected

from light). The diluted product does not promote the growth of common

organisms. However, prolonged storage of the diluted product cannot be

recommended, as the effects of possible contaminants and interactions with

untested materials are unknown.

Suggested Parasite Control Program

All horses should be included in a regular parasite control program with

particular attention being paid to mares, foals and yearlings. Foals should be

treated initially at 6 to 8 weeks of age, and routine treatment repeated as

appropriate for the individual property. Frequency of treatment should be

assessed by each property's veterinary adviser considering the number of

horses, their age distribution, reproductive status, stocking rate, grazing

access, climate and the property's parasite infestation status. EQUIMEC is

highly effective against gastrointestinal, cutaneous and pulmonary

nematodes and bots of horses of all ages.

Regular treatment will reduce

the chances of verminous arteritis and colic caused by S. vulgaris.

Safety to Horses

EQUIMEC Liquid may be used in horses of all ages including mares at any

stage of pregnancy provided normal care is taken in handling. Stallions may

be treated without adversely affecting their fertility.

Swelling and itching reactions after treatment with EQUIMEC Liquid have

occurred in horses carrying heavy infections of neck threadworm

microfilariae, Onchocerca sp. These reactions were most likely the result of

microfilariae dying in large numbers. Symptomatic treatment may be

advisable.

Healing of summer sores involving extensive tissue changes may require

other therapy in conjunction with EQUIMEC Liquid. Reinfection, and

measures for its prevention, should also be considered.

DO NOT USE IN ANIMALS OTHER THAN HORSES

PACKAGE INFORMATION

EQUIMEC Liquid is available in a 100 mL plastic bottle. Each bottle

contains sufficient ivermectin to treat ten 500 kg horses. Contents may be

poured into a graduated cylinder for dose measurement. Alternatively, a

clean, dry syringe may be inserted directly into the bottle to draw off the

appropriate dose.
