1. WHAT ELTROXIN IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Eltroxin
50
contains
50
micrograms
of
levothyroxine
sodium, a synthetic thyroid hormone.
Eltroxin 100 contains 100 micrograms of levothyroxine
sodium, a synthetic thyroid hormone.
Eltroxin 50 or Eltroxin100 is used:
-
for replacement therapy (substitution) for the missing
hormone in all forms of hypothyroidism (underactive
thyroid).
-
to prevent the return of new goitres (swelling of the neck
due to enlargement of the malfunctioning thyroid gland)
after
goitre
surgery
in
patients
with
normal
thyroid
function.
-
to treat non-cancerous (benign) goitre in patients with
normal thyroid function.
-
as
add-on
therapy
in
the
antithyroid
treatment
(to
achieve stable thyroid function) of an overactive thyroid
(hyperthyroidism),
after
normal
metabolic
status
has
been reached.
-
treatment
to
suppress
new
tumour
growth
and
as
replacement therapy in thyroid cancer, especially after
surgical removal of the thyroid gland
- Eltroxin 100 is also used in the thyroid suppression test.
