Product Information – Australia Version 4.0 Page 1 DBL™ CEPHALOTHIN SODIUM FOR INJECTION NAME OF THE MEDICINE Cephalothin sodium The CAS registry numbers of cephalothin and cephalothin sodium are 153-61-7 and 58-71-9, respectively. The structural formula of cephalothin sodium is shown below: N S NaO O O CH 3 O O N H O S H H DESCRIPTION Cephalothin sodium is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for parenteral use. Cephalothin sodium is sodium (6R,7R)-3-acetoxymethyl-8-oxo-7-[2-(2-thienyl)acetamido]-5-thia-1-azabicyclo [4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylate. The molecular formula of cephalothin sodium is C 16 H 15 N 2 NaO 6 S 2 and the molecular weight is 418.4. Cephalothin sodium occurs as a white to off white, almost odourless, crystalline powder. The drug is freely soluble in water, sodium chloride 0.9% solution and in glucose solutions. It is slightly soluble in dehydrated alcohol, and practically insoluble in ether and most other organic solvents. Cephalothin sodium has been reported to be incompatible with aminoglycosides and with many other agents. DBL™ Cephalothin Sodium for Injection contains the active ingredient cephalothin sodium and sodium bicarbonate. A 10% or 25% solution of cephalothin sodium in water has a pH of 4.5 to 7. However, precipitation may occur in solutions with a pH of less than 5. Therefore, sodium bicarbonate has been added to result in reconstituted solutions having a pH ranging between 6 and 8.5. 1.06 g of cephalothin sodium is approximately equivalent to 1 g of cephalothin. Each gram of cephalothin sodium represents 2.39 mmol of sodium. The total sodium content is approximately 63 mg (sodium ion 2.8 mEq) per gram of DBL™ Cephalothin Sodium for Injection.
