USES
ACTIONS
Cefazolin sodium is a semisynthetic cephalosporin for intramuscular or
intravenous
administration.  _In vitro _tests demonstrate that the bactericidal
action of
cephalosporins results from inhibition of cell-wall synthesis.

Cefazolin is active against the following organisms _in vitro _and
in clinical infections:
_Staphylococcus aureus _
(including penicillinase-producing strains); _Staphylococcus _
_epidermidis_
; Group A β -haemolytic streptococci and other strains of
streptococci
(many strains of enterococci are resistant); _Streptococcus
pneumoniae;_ _Escherichia _
_coli;_
_Klebsiella  _sp.;  _Proteus mirabilis; _  _Haemophilus
influenzae_;  _Enterobacter _
_aerogenes._

Most strains of indole-positive _Proteus (Proteus vulgaris),
Enterobacter cloacae, _
_Morganella morganii, _
and  _Providencia rettgeri _are resistant. Methicillin-resistant
staphylococci,  _Serratia, Pseudomonas _and  _Acinetobacter_  _calcoaceticus  _(formerly
_Mima _
and _Herellea _sp.) are almost uniformly resistant to cefazolin.

DISC SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTS
Quantitative methods that require measurements of
zone diameters give the most
precise estimates of antibiotic susceptibility. One such procedure
has been
recommended for use with discs for testing
