Side Effects:
In cases of serum reactions in cats an appropriate dose of adrenaline
(0.1mL of 1:1000)
should be given intravenously RLP APPROVED
As a guide, a dose of >2000 units (10mL) of AVSL Multi Brown Snake
antivenom should
be taken as that dose required to effectively counter one average
brown snake bite in an
animal. However the volume of venom expressed when a snake bites an
animal will vary
with the geographical location, size of the snake and other biological
conditions. Because
of this large variation in cases of envenomation presented to the
clinician, an identical
response to a similar dose rate in each patient cannot be expected.
For severely affected
animals multiple doses may be required initially. Where a patient has
shown a response
to antivenom but has subsequently deteriorated in clinical condition
the administration of
further vials of antivenom should be considered.
The antivenom should be gently warmed to room temperature, diluted up
to 1 in 10 in
0.9% saline or Hartmann’s solution and administered SLOWLY over
20-30 minutes by
the intravenous route in both dogs and cats. In some severely affected
patients it may be
necessary to give the antivenom over a shor
