HOW ALLERSIN SYRUP WORKS The active ingredient in the medicine is chlorpheniramine maleate. Chlorpheniramine maleate is an anti-histamine. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. BEFORE YOU USE ALLERSIN SYRUP _- When you must not use it _ Do not take Allersin Syrup if you: are hypersensitive to chlorpheniramine maleate, or any of the other ingredients listed at the end of the leaflet. _ _ closed-angle glaucoma (increase pressure in eyes). are taking medication for depression known as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). have stomach or duodenal ulcer. _ _ have urine retention. _ _ have asthma attack. _ _ _- Before you start to use it _ You should check with your doctor if you are or think you may be pregnant, planning to become pregnant or if you are breastfeeding. It is not recommended for pregnant women and nursing mothers unless the expected benefit outweighs any potential risks. Safety during pregnancy has not been established. Use by nursing mothers is not recommended because of the risks of side effects to the baby. Tablet : Round, yellow, convex, plain tablet with debossed on one side. PHARMACODYNAMICS: Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine that possesses anticholinergic and sedative effects. It acts by occupying the 'receptive sites' on the effector cells to the exclusion of the agonist without initiating a response. Chlorpheniramine is a H1 receptor antagonist. It antagonizes many of the pharmacologic actions of histamine. It prevents released histamine from dilating capillaries and causing edema of the respiratory mucosa. PHARMACOKINETICS: Chlorpheniramine is well absorbed and has a duration of action 4 to 6 hours. Its half-life in serum is 12 to 16 hours. Degradation products of chlorpheniramine metabolic transformation by the liver are almost completely excreted in 24 hours. INDICATION: It is indicated in allergic conditions responsive to antihistamines. RECOMMENDED DOSAGE: Adult Usual dose: 4 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Usual adult prescribing limit: Up to 24 mg daily. Paediatric Children 6-12 years: 2 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 12 mg daily. Children 2-5 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 6 mg daily. Geriatric Usual adult dose. Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the effects of the usual adult dose.
