A device designed to prevent pressure sores (eg: decubitus ulcers) and/or preserve skin integrity on the parts of the patient's body which are prone to physical irritation. Pressure off-loading formats can include low shear / low friction contact surfaces &/or garments, skin &/or body conforming pads or (non-adhesive) tapes, strips, wraps, underlays, supports etc that provide a flexible and/or conforming barrier to friction, tears or abrasions. Variants are suitable for a range of patients including essentially immobile patients where the body is immobilized, or for disabled, infirm persons who are confined to sitting/lying positions and also for ongoing or discrete use where an interface between irritants and the skin is desired (eg: splints, tubing). The device is usually constructed from materials that can be formed to accommodate the patient's body shape, including prominent or unprotected bony parts, or conform to a medical device e.g. collars, oxygen cannula, nasal-gastric and catheter tubing, crutches, etc. The devices are non-sterile and are typically single patient reusable.
