DESCRIPTION
Glucocorticoids are adrenocortical steroids, both naturally occurring
and synthetic, which are readily
absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Hydrocortisone is a white to practically white, odorless, crystalline
powder, very slightly soluble in
water. The molecular weight is 362.47. It is designated chemically as
11B, 17,21-trihydroxy-pregn-4-
ene-3,20-dione. The molecular formula is C
H O and the structural formula is:
Hydrocortisone is believed to be the principal hormone secreted by the
adrenal cortex.
Each tablet for oral administration contains 20 mg of hydrocortisone.
Inactive Ingredients: Anhydrous Lactose, Colloidal Silicon Dioxide,
Magnesium Stearate,
Microcrystalline Cellulose, and Sodium Starch Glycolate.
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Naturally occurring glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone and cortisone),
which also have salt-retaining
properties, are used as replacement therapy in adrenocortical
deficiency states. They are also used for
their potent anti-inflammatory effects in disorders of many organ
systems.
Glucocorticoids cause profound and varied metabolic effects. In
addition, they modify the body's
immune responses to diverse stimuli.
