WHAT CLARITHRO IS USED FOR CLARITHRO is used to treat certain bacterial infections, including the following: respiratory tract infections skin infections peptic ulcer. CLARITHRO is also used to prevent a specific bacterial infection associated with HIV infection. Your doctor, however, may have prescribed CLARITHRO for another purpose. ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY CLARITHRO HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU. CLARITHRO is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of medicines called macrolides. These medicines work by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria which cause infections. CLARITHRO will not work against infections caused by viruses, such as colds or flu. CLARITHRO is available only with a doctor's prescription. CLARITHRO TO TREAT PEPTIC ULCER Peptic ulcers are associated with an infection in the intestine and stomach caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ). CLARITHRO- Product Information Page 1 of 15 Clarithro PRODUCT INFORMATION NAME OF THE DRUG Clarithro (clarithromycin) tablet. The chemical name for clarithromycin is 6-O-methylerythromycin A. Its structural formula is: C 38 H 69 NO 13 Molecular weight: 747.96 Cas No.: 81103-11-9 DESCRIPTION Clarithromycin is a white to off-white crystalline powder, soluble in acetone, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol and acetonitrile, and practically insoluble in water. Clarithro tablets come in two strengths and contain either 250 mg or 500 mg of clarithromycin. The tablets also contain the following excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, pregelatinised maize starch, povidone, purified talc, magnesium stearate, colloidal anhydrous silica, Opadry II 40L22445 yellow (250 mg tablets) and Opadry II 40L22444 yellow (500 mg tablets). The tablets are gluten free. PHARMACOLOGY MICROBIOLOGY: Clarithromycin exerts its antibacterial action by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunits of susceptible organisms and inhibiting protein synthesis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of clarithromycin are generally one log 2 dilution more potent than the MICs of erythromycin. However, clarithromycin is much more potent than erythromycin against atypical mycobacteria. Clarithromycin is active in vitro and in vivo against the organisms listed below.
