TECHNICAL NOTES
ACTIVE CONSTITUENTS
Zinc bacitracin 250 IU/g
Neomycin sulfate 5 mg/g
Polymixin B sulfate 5,000 IU/g
ACTIONS
The three antibiotics are collectively active against a very wide
range of pathogenic organisms. Bacitracin (as the stable zinc salt) is
active against many Gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococci,
haemolytic and nonhaemolytic Streptococci, Clostridia of the gas
gangrene group and certain Gram-negative cocci. Unlike penicillin,
bacitracin is not destroyed by Gram-negative bacteria, so can be
used in certain mixed infections where penicillin would be
inactivated.
Polymyxin B sulfate has a bactericidal action on most Gram-negative
organisms, especially_ Klebsiella aerogenes, K. pneumoniae, _
_Escherichia coli, Shigella _spp. and _Pseudomonas aeruginosa. _Its
activity is not affected by the size of the bacterial population and
bacterial resistance to it is low.
Neomycin sulfate is a broad spectrum antibiotic effective against many
Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, including
_Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Strep. pyogenes, E.
coli _and some strains of_ Proteus vulgaris, Ps. aeruginosa_ and
certain
actinomycetes_. _Neomycin sulfate is not inactivated by bacteria or
pus. The product disperses well, is non-irritating and there is good
contact of active ingredients with the cornea and aural mucosa.
INDICATIONS
Infections due to susceptible organisms.
WITHHOLDING PERIODS
MEAT (HORSES): Do not use less than 28 days before slaughter for human
consumption.
