HOW FLUIMUCIL WORKS FLUIMUCIL contains the active ingredient acetylcysteine. Acetylcysteine belongs to a group of medicines called mucolytics which work by thinning the mucus (phlegm) so that it can be coughed up more easily. BEFORE YOU USE FLUIMUCIL - _When you must not use it_ - If you are hypersensitive to acetylcysteine or to any of the other ingredients in FLUIMUCIL; - If you are suffering from active stomach/intestinal ulcer; - If you are suffering from phenylketonuria (genetic condition where you are unable to break down a substance called phenylalanine); - If you are intolerance to fructose sugar (due to the sweetener sorbitol); - If you are intolerance to galactose (due to the glucose and lactose); - Do not use in children under 2 years of age; - Do not use in children aged less than 12 years (in case of cystic fibrosis: children under 6 years of age). - _Before you start to use it_ Always ask your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you have - asthma, as you may need to be monitored closely - history of stomach/intestinal ulcer, as oral acetylcysteine may induce vomiting. - intolerance to histamine. Furthermore, NAC, exerts a direct antioxidant action, being provided with a free thiol (-SH nucleophillic) group, which is able to interact directly with the electrophilic groups of the oxidant radicals. Of particular interest is the recent demonstration that NAC protects the a1-antitrypsin, enzyme inhibitor of elastase, from the inactivation due to the action of hypochlorous add (HOCI), a powerful oxidant agent produced by the myeloperoxidase enzyme of activated phagocytes. These features make FLUIMUCIL A particularly suitable for the treatment of acute and chronic affections of the respiratory system, characterized by thick and viscous mucous and mucopurulent secretions. Furthermore, the molecular structure permits the molecule to cross easily cellular membranes. Inside the cell, NAC is deacetylized, forming L-cysteine, an amino acid indispensable for the glutathione synthesis (GSH.) GSH is a highly reactive tripeptide, found ubiquitously in the various tissues of animals and is essential for the maintenance of functional capacity as well as cellular morphological integrity, as it represents the most important protective, endocellular mechanism against oxidant radials, either of external or internal nature, as well as towards numerous cytotoxic substances. NAC plays a role of primary importance in the maintenance of adequate GSH levels thus contributing to the cellular protection from harmful agents which, through progressive GSH depletion, would b Lesen Sie das vollständige Dokument
