PHARMACOWGY
Methadone
is
a potent morphine analogue neuroleptanalgesic which raises the pain
threshold by binding
to
J.l-
opiate receptors.
Methadone is pharmacologically similar to, but has three times the
analgesic potency
of, morphine.
Methadone depresses the respiratory centre
of
the medulla and stimulates the vagal
centre, resulting
in
reduced respiratory rate and minute volume, and bradycardia.
Intestinal tonus is increased. All such effects are slight at clinical
dose levels and may

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Keep an emergency kit in a standard known place. Know how to carry out
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If CNS
depression is profound attempt intravenous administration of 0.8 mg
naloxone (_Narcan_ 0.4 mg/mL). If this is not
achieved, administer 0.8 mg naloxone intramuscularly, preferably into
the thigh muscle. The dose may be
repeated at 2 to 3 minute intervals until consciousness is regained.
Keep the patient warm and seek medical
assistance as soon as possible.
SWALLOWED: In acute poisoning by mouth the stomach should be emptied.
Apply first aid as above. Seek
medical assistance as soon as possible.
EYE: If in eyes, hold eyes open, flood with water for at least 15
minutes. Apply first aid as above. Seek medical
assistance as soon as possible.
SKIN: If skin contact occurs remove contaminated clothing and wash
skin thoroughly. Apply first aid as above.
Seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
INHALED: Apply first aid as above. Seek medical assistance as soon as
possible.
FIRST AID FACILITIES: No specific requirements
ADVICE TO DOCTOR: Treat with specific narcotic antagonist as
indicated. Oxygen should be administered
