KEEP THIS LEAFLET WITH YOUR MEDICINE. You may need to read it again. WHAT ZIMSTAT IS USED FOR Zimstat helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood. Everyone has cholesterol and triglyceride in their blood. They are types of blood fat needed by the body for many things, such as building cell walls, making bile acids (which help to digest food) and some hormones. However, too much cholesterol and triglyceride can be a problem. Cholesterol is present in many foods and is also made in your body by the liver. If your body does not balance the amount of cholesterol it needs with the amount of cholesterol eaten, then your cholesterol becomes too high. High cholesterol is more likely to occur with certain diseases or if you have a family history of high cholesterol. When you have high levels of cholesterol it may 'stick' to the inside of your blood vessels instead of being carried to the parts of the body where it is needed. Over time, this can form hard areas (called plaques) on the walls of your blood vessels, making it more difficult for the blood to flow. This blocking of your blood vessels can lead to heart disease (such as heart attack and angina) and stroke. In patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) accompanied by high cholesterol levels, Zimstat may slow down the hardening of blood vessels and reduce the risk of new plaque formation. ZIMSTAT _Simvastatin _ PRODUCT INFORMATION NAME OF THE MEDICINE Active ingredient: Simvastatin Chemical name: [1S-[1 α, 3 α, 7 β, 8 β (2S*, 4S*),8a β]]-1,2,3,7,8,8a-hexahydro-3,7-dimethyl-8-[2- (tetrahydro-4-hydroxy-6-oxo-2H-pyran-2-yl)ethyl]-1-naphthalenyl2,2- dimethylbutanoate. Structural formula: O O H 3 C H 3 C CH 3 H HO CH 3 H 3 C H O O Molecular formula: C 25 H 38 O 5 Molecular weight: 418.57 CAS Registry no.: 79902-63-9 DESCRIPTION Simvastatin is a white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water and freely soluble in chloroform, methanol and ethanol. Each tablet for oral administration contains either 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg or 80 mg of simvastatin and the following non-medicinal ingredients: butylated hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid, citric acid monohydrate, cellulose - microcrystalline, starch - pregelatinised maize, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, lactose, titanium dioxide, glycerol triacetate and purified talc. Iron oxide yellow (CI77492) is a constituent of Zimstat 5 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg tablets and iron oxide red (CI77491) of Zimstat 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg tablets. The 40 mg tablet contains polydextrose, macrogol 8000, iron oxide yellow (CI77492) and iron oxide red (CI77491). PHARMACOLOGY CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY The involvement of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) in atherogenesis has been well documented in clinical and pathological studies, as well as in many animal experiments. Epidemiological studies have established that high LDL-C and low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) are both risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD).
