Composición: 100 g  de  Viru-Merz  contienen 1,0 g  de  clorhidrato  de  Tromantadina 
(D. C. I.) en excipiente hidrosoluble gel c.s.p.
Propiedades: Viru-Merz contiene una sustancia virustática, el clorhidrato de Troman-
tadina (D. C. I.), sintetizada en los laboratorios Merz que inactiva tanto a los virus del tipo
desoxiribonucléico como a los del tipo ribonucléico; inhibe sobre todo a los virus 1 y 2
del herpes simple. El gel posee una adhesividad óptima, por medio de la cual intensifica
el periodo de contacto y la actividad.
Indicaciones: Tratamiento de las manifestaciones iniciales de las infecciones cutáneas
y  semimucosas  por  virus  des  herpes  simple  (p.  ej.  hormigueos,  pinchazos,  prurito,
sensación de tirantez y dolor, hinchazón previa del estadio de
vesiculación), manifesta-
ciones dérmicas del herpes zoster.
Contraindicaciones:  Viru-Merz  no  se  aplicará  si  han  aparecido  reacciones  de  hiper-
sensibilidad  después  de  un  tratamiento  anterior  con  tromantadina.  Tampoco  se  utili-
zarán en
– el herpes simple después de la aparición de las vesículas, sobre todo si las vesículas
ya se han abierto,
– herpes zoster, si durante el tratamiento se produce un incremento
del enrojecimiento,
hinchazón o vesiculación con diseminación hacia áreas cutáneas no
afectadas.
Embarazo:  No  se  dispone  de  experiencia  suficiente  con  el  uso  durante  el  embarazo.
La  experimentación  animal  no  aportó  pruebas  de  efectos  embriotóxicos/teratógenos.
Lactancia: Se desconoce si la sustancia pasa a la leche materna.
No se puede utilizar en pacientes con hipersensibilidad conocida a los alquil-4-hidroxi-
benzoatos (parabenos).

1. NAME OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT 

Viru-Merz 10 mg/g  
Gel 

2. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION 

Active substance: tromantadine hydrochloride.  
1 g gel contains 0.01 g tromantadine hydrochloride. 

Excipients: methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and sorbic
acid: see also chapter 4.4.

3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM 

Gel 
The gel is natural-coloured and transparent. 

4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 

4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS 

For the relief of the initial manifestations of recurrent
herpes simplex, particularly pain and itching, 
but only before the stage of blister formation. 

4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION  

Cutaneous use. 
Apply 3 to 5 times daily, more frequently if required.
Apply enough gel to the affected skin areas to 
cover the whole herpes lesion. Then rub in gently. 

Administration of Viru-Merz may only be continued until blisters
occur (approximately 2–3 days). 
Administration must be immediately discontinued if, during
treatment, existing symptoms worsen 
or new lesions occur (see section 4.4). 

4.3 CONTRAINDICATIONS 

Viru-Merz may not be used under the following circumstances: 
- 
hypersensitivity to
tromantadine hydrochloride, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate or
any of the 
excipients of  
Viru-Merz  
- 
if hypersensitivity reactions
have occurred after previous treatment with tromantadine 
hydrochloride 
- 
in herpes simplex after blisters have appeared, particularly if
these have already opened.

4.4 SPECIAL WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS FOR USE 

It is difficult to distinguish between possible contact allergy
occurring at the site of treatment (see 
section 4.8) and the underlying herpes infection itself.
