WHAT SUPRIM SUSPENSION IS USED FOR
Suprim
suspension
is
a
type
of
antibacterial medicine, which works by
killing bacteria. It is used for treatment
of:
•
Urinary tract infections caused by
E. coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, P.
mirabilis, P. vulgaris and
Morganella morganii.
•
Acute
otitis
media
in
children
caused
by
H.
influenzae
and
Streptococcus pneumoniae.
•
Acute
exacerbations
of
chronic
bronchitis in adults caused by H.
influenzae
and
Streptococcus
pneumoniae.
•
Enteritis
caused
by
Shigella
flexneri and S. sonnei.
•
Pneumonitis
caused
by
Pneumocystis carinii.
HOW SUPRIM SUSPENSION WORKS
Sulphamethoxazole
and
trimethoprim,
both broad-spectrum bacteriostatic anti-
infectives,
inhibit
the
bacterial
enzymes,
dihydropteroate
synthetase
and
dihydrofolic
acid
reductase
respectively. Their synergistic effect is
attributed
to
the
inhibition
of
tetrahydrofolic
acid
production,
a
cofactor for the synthesis of purines,
thymidine and DNA, at two sequential
steps
in
the
folic
acid
biosynthesis.
Sulphamethoxazole
and
trimethoprim,
both undergo hepatic metabolism and
renal excretion.
BEFORE YOU USE SUPRIM SUSPENSION
_- When you must not use it _

Do not take this medicine if:
•
you are known to be hypersensitive
to
sulphonamides,
frusemide,
sulfones,
thiazide
diuretics,
sulfonylureas
or
carbonic
anhydrase inhibitors.
•
you
are
a
patient
with
megaloblastic anaemia.
•
you are a patient with glucose-6-
phosphate
dehydrogenase
(G6PD)
deficiency,
porphyria,
renal
and
hepatic function impairment.

                                DESCRIPTION
White, viscous suspension with raspberry flavour.
COMPOSITION
Sulphamethoxazole 200 mg and trimethoprim 40 mg/5 ml
suspension.
PHARMACODYNAMICS AND
PHARMACOKINETICS
Sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim, both broad-spectrum
bacteriostatic anti-infectives, inhibit the bacterial enzymes,
dihydropteroate synthetase and dihydrofolic acid reductase
respectively. Their synergistic effect is attributed to the inhibition
of tetrahydrofolic acid production, a cofactor for the synthesis of
purines, thymidine and DNA, at two sequential steps in the folic
acid biosynthesis. Sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim, both
undergo hepatic metabolism and renal excretion.
INDICATIONS
For treatment of :
•
Urinary
tract
infections
caused
by
_E. _
_coli, _
_Klebsiella, _
_Enterobacter, _
_P. _
_mirabilis, _
_P. _
_vulgaris_
and
_Morganella _
_morganii._
•
Acute otitis media in children caused by _H. influenzae_ and
_Streptococcus pneumoniae._
•
Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults caused
by _H. influenzae_ and _Streptococcus pneumoniae_.
•
Enteritis caused by _Shigella flexneri_ and _S. sonnei._
•
Pneumonitis caused by _Pneumocystis carinii._
CONTRAINDICATIONS
•
Avoid
in
patients
known
to
be
hypersensitive
to
sulphonamides,
frusemide,
sulfones,
thiazide
diuretics,
sulfonylureas or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.
•
Not recommended in patients with megaloblastic anaemia.
•
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.
PRECAUTIONS
•
Caution
in
patients
with
glucose-6-phosphate
dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, porphyria, renal and
hepatic function impairment and in nursing mothers.
•
All patients receiving prolonged treatment should be given
regular blood examinations.
•
Adequate fluid intake will help to prevent risk of crystalluria.
•
There is an increased risk of adverse reactions in elderly
patients
in
particular
blood
disorders
and
adverse
renal/hepatic reactions.
