WHAT LOPERAMIDE HYDROCHLORIDE 2MG TABLETS IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR These tablets contain Loperamide Hydrochloride a substance which helps reduce diarrhoea (loose bowels), by slowing down the movements of your intestine to prevent loose bowels. This allows water and salts that are usually lost in diarrhoea to be absorbed by the body. Loperamide Hydrochloride 2mg Tablets can be used to treat two types of diarrhoea with different age limits: The tablets can be used to relieve short term sudden attacks of diarrhoea in adults and children aged 12 years and over. To treat attacks that last up to 48 hours. If the condition does not get better within 48 hours, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist. These tablets can also be used by adults of 18 years and over who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) diarrhoea, which has been previously diagnosed by a doctor, to Treat attacks that last up to 48 hours. SUMMARY OF PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS 1 NAME OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT Loperamide Hydrochloride Tablets 2mg 2. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION Each tablet contains 2 mg Loperamide hydrochloride. Excipient with known effect: lactose For a full list of excipients, see section 6.1 3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Tablet White , round biconvex tablet, Marked “T3” on one side, scored on reverse 4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS For the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea, in adults and children aged 12 years and over. For the symptomatic treatment of acute episodes of diarrhoea associated with irritable bowel syndrome in adults aged 18 years and over following initial diagnosis by a doctor. 4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION POSOLOGY : Acute Diarrhoea Adults and children over 12 years: 2 tablets (4 mg) initially followed by 1 tablet (2 mg) after every loose stool. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 tablets (12 mg). Symptomatic treatment of acute episodes of diarrhoea associated with irritable bowel syndrome in adults aged 18 years and over Two tablets (4 mg) to be taken initially, followed by 1 tablet (2 mg) after every loose stool, or as previously advised by your doctor. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 tablets (12 mg). PAEDIATRIC POPULATION Contraindicated in children younger than 12 years of age USE IN ELDERLY No dose adjustment is required for the elderly. RENAL IMPAIRMENT No dose adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment. HEPATIC IMPAIRMENT Although no pharmacokinetic data are available in patients with hepatic impairment, Imodium should be used with caution in such patients because of reduced first pass metabolism. (See 4.4 Special warnings and special precautions for use). METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION Oral use.
