Linctus
15mg/5ml
is
used
for
the
relief
of
unproductive
coughs associated with common cold,
sinusitis
(inflammation
of
cavities
around
the
nasal
passages)
and
influenza. Suitable for cough treatment
for diabetics.
HOW
DUCODIN
FORTE
LINCTUS
15MG/5ML WORKS
Pholcodine is a cough suppressant and
has
a
mild
sedative
effect
which
relieves
local
irritation
of
the
respiratory tract over 8 to 10 hours.
Pholcodine acts primarily on the central
nervous
system
(CNS)
causing
depression of the cough reflex which is
due partly to the direct effect on the
cough centre in the medulla (a part of
the brain).
Pholcodine has little or no analgesic
(pain relief) action. It does not cause
depression
of
respiration,
CNS
excitation,
constipation
or
other
side
effects
associated
with
narcotics.
Pholcodine has a selective effect on the
cough
centre
without
affecting
the
respiratory centre.

intolerance

hypersensitive
pholcodine or any other component in
this product.
Do
not
take
this
medicine
after
the
expiry date printed on the pack or if the
packaging is damaged.

DESCRIPTION
DUCODIN LINCTUS 5MG/5ML:
Orange liquid with orange flavour.
DUCODIN FORTE LINCTUS 15MG/5ML:
Red liquid with cherry flavour.
COMPOSITION
Each 5 ml contains:
DUCODIN LINCTUS 5MG/5ML:
5mg of Pholcodine.
DUCODIN FORTE LINCTUS 15MG/5ML:
15mg of Pholcodine.
PHARMACODYNAMICS
Pholcodine is an opioid chemically related to morphine.
Pholcodine is a cough suppressant and has a mild sedative
effect which relieves local irritation of the respiratory tract
over 8 to 10 hours. Pholcodine acts primarily on the CNS
causing depression of the cough reflex which is due partly to
the direct effect on the cough centre in the medulla.
Pholcodine has little or no analgesic action. Unlike morphine,
codeine and dihydrocodeine therapeutic doses of pholcodine
do not cause depression of respiration, CNS excitation,
constipation or other side effects associated with narcotics.
Pholcodine has a selective effect on the cough centre
without affecting the respiratory centre.
Pholcodine
is
not
euphorigeric
therefore
psychological
dependence
is
unlikely
to
be
a
problem.
There
is
no
evidence
of
physical
dependence
after
prolonged
administration of pholcodine so it is not likely to be habit
forming.
PHARMACOKINETICS
Pholcodine is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
and does cross the bloodbrain barrier. It is metabolized in the
liver and its action maybe prolonged in hepatic insufficiency.
INDICATIONS
For
the
relief
of
unproductive
coughs
associated
with
common cold, sinusitis and influenza. Suitable for cough
treatment for diabetics.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Intolerance or hypersensitivity to pholcodine or any other
component.
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
Pholcodine
should
not
be
given
to
patients
at
risk
of
developing respiratory failure. Caution is needed in patients
with a history of asthma and it should not be given during
acute attack. Constipation or drowsiness has been reported
occasionally.
Since pholcodine is metabolized in liver, its action may be
prolonged
in
hepatic
insufficiency.
