For the parenteral carbohydrate source, conventionally monosaccharides such as glucose, fructose, etc., and sugar polyalcohols such as sorbitol and xylitol have been used. Glucose, in particular, occurs most universally in the nature, and it is a physiological sugar source to the body. Its history as a parenteral sugar source goes back more than 100 years, and still its importance remains unchanged . Maltose is a naturally occuring disaccharide, being composed of two glucose molecules . Conventional carbohydrate sources are isotonic with the human blood at the concentration of 5 w/v%, while maltose is isotonic at the concentration of 10 w/v%. Hence, the isotonic maltose solution can contain double carolie as high as equi-quantitative amount of isotonic glucose solution. Maltose administered intravenously enters into the cell without the aid of insulin, where it is hydrolyzed to two molecules of glucose by α -glucosidase(maltase) activity and then metabolized to become energic source. Maltose is readily metabolized under the normal conditions. Its metabolism is not impeded even under diabetic conditions, and the blood glucose level is little affected after the administration. Thus, MARTOS-10(10% Maltose Injection)is a new parenteral carbohydrate having many specific advantages over the conventional monosaccharide preparations .
