WHAT LASIX IS USED FOR
Lasix 40 mg tablets are used for:
−
fluid retention (
_oedema_
) due to
diseases of the heart or the liver,
−
fluid retention (
_oedema_
) due to
kidney problems,
−
fluid retention (
_oedema_
) due to
burns,
−
high blood pressure (
_hypertension_
).
HOW LASIX WORKS
Lasix contains furosemide, which
belongs to a family of drugs called
diuretics. A diuretic helps reduce the
amount of excess fluid in the body by
increasing urine excretion. Lasix may
also be used to lower high blood
pressure.
BEFORE YOU USE LASIX
_WHEN YOU MUST NOT USE IT _
Do not take Lasix if you have:
- kidney damage which has stopped
them functioning and producing urine
- liver failure with impaired
consciousness (coma and hepatic
precoma)
- low sodium levels in your blood
- low potassium levels in your blood
- dehydration
- allergies to: this medicine or any of
the ingredients listed at the end of this
leaflet, medicines called sulfonamides
(eg. some types of antibiotics which
are also referred to as 'sulfur
antibiotics') or
sulfonylureas (medicines which can be
used to treat diabetes)
- Some symptoms of an allergic
reaction include skin rash, itching,
shortness of breath or swelling of the
face, lips or tongue, which may cause
difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
Do not take Lasix if you are breast-
feeding or planning to breast-feed.
- Lasix passes into breast milk and
there is possibility your baby may be
affected.

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to:
–
any of the ingredients listed at the
end of this leaflet
–
any other medicines called
sulfonamides or sulfonylureas
–
any other substances, such as foods

COMPOSITION
Each tablet contains, as active ingredient, 40 mg furosemide.
Excipients: Maize starch, pregelatinized maize starch, lactose,
colloidal anhydrous silica, talc,
magnesium stearate.
PROPERTIES
Lasix is a medicine which increases urine excretion (loop diuretic)
and lowers high blood pressure
(antihypertensive).
INDICATIONS
-
Oedema due to cardiac, hepatic, or renal disorders (in the presence of
nephritic syndrome,
treatment of the basic disorder is the prime concern). Oedema due to
burns. Mild to moderate
hypertension.
POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
The dosage should be tailored to individual needs, especially
according to the success of therapy.
The lowest dose at which the desired effect is obtained should always
be used.
For adults, the following dosage guidelines apply:
Oedema _due to cardiac, hepatic, _or _renal disorders_:
The initial dose for adults is 1 Lasix 40 mg tablet (equivalent to 40
mg furosemide). If adequate
diuresis is not achieved, the individual dose may be doubled after 6
hours to 2 Lasix 40 mg tablets
(equivalent to 80 mg furosemide). If satisfactory diuresis is still
not attained, 4 Lasix 40 mg tablets
(equivalent to 160 mg furosemide) can be administered after a further
6 hours. If necessary, initial
doses of over 200 mg furosemide may be used in exceptional cases under
careful clinical supervision.
The daily maintenance dose is usually 1 - 2 Lasix 40 mg tablets
(equivalent to 40 – 80 mg furosemide).
The weight loss caused by increased diuresis should not exceed 1 kg
per day.
In nephrotic syndrome, the dose must be determined carefully because
of the risk of increased
undesirable effects.
_Oedemas_ due to burns:
The daily and/or single dose can be between 1 and 2 ½ Lasix 40 mg
tablets (equivalent to 40 -
100 mg furosemide); in exceptional cases in impaired renal function,
up to 6 Lasix 40 mg tablets
(equivalent to 240 mg furosemide) may be administered.
