WHAT CANESTEN FLUCONAZOLE CAPSULE IS USED FOR 
Canesten Fluconazole
Capsule is used to treat a fungal infection
in the vagina (vaginal 
thrush). 
This medicine belongs to a group of medicines called azole
antifungals. 
Canesten Fluconazole Capsule is taken by mouth and
works from the inside to prevent the 
growth of the fungi causing your infection.   
_WHAT IS VAGINAL THRUSH? _
Vaginal thrush is the common name for vaginal candidiasis, an infection caused by a
yeast-
like fungus
called _Candida_.  _Candida_ can multiply rapidly and cause
damage to the vagina 
when other micro-
organisms aren’t present in a normal balance.  
Some situations which
can increase susceptibility to thrush are: 

  diabetes 

  obesity 

  illness 

  fatigue 

  hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy, menstrual cycle, oral contraceptive
pill, HRT) 

  prolonged use of antibiotics or steroids 

Thrush may cause the following symptoms:   

  vaginal itching

CANESTEN FLUCONAZOLE CAPSULE
™

FLUCONAZOLE ORAL CAPSULE 150 MG 

NAME OF MEDICINE 
FLUCONAZOLE 
Fluconazole is a bis-triazole: 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1,3-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2-propanol.  It is a white
to off-
white crystalline powder which is sparingly soluble in water and
saline. It has a molecular weight of 306.3. 

Structural formula: 

DESCRIPTION 
Each Canesten Fluconazole Capsule contains fluconazole 150 mg
as the active ingredient.  

Size 1 hard gelatin
capsule with white opaque body and white opaque
cap.  The body has "FC 150" and the cap 
has "G" printed in black.  The capsule contains white to
off-white powder.  Other ingredients present include 
lactose, maize
(corn) starch, sodium lauryl sulphate, colloidal hydrated silica, magnesium stearate,
gelatin and 
titanium dioxide (E171).
 The ingredients present in the black printing ink used for
coding the capsules include 
shellac, dehydrated alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, butyl alcohol,
propylene glycol, ammonia solution, potassium 
hydroxide and black iron oxide (E172). 

PHARMACOLOGY 
_ACTIONS _
Fluconazole is a member of the bis-triazole antifungal agents.
Fluconazole is a highly selective inhibitor of fungal 
cytochrome P-450 sterol C-14 alpha
demethylation.  Mammalian cell demethylation is much
less sensitive to 
fluconazole
inhibition.  The subsequent loss of normal sterols correlates with the accumulation
of 14 alpha-methyl 
sterols in fungi and may be responsible for the
fungistatic activity of fluconazole.  Interaction studies with
antipyrine 
indicate that single or multiple doses of fluconazole 50 mg do
not affect its metabolism.

Fluconazole is well absorbed and oral absorption is not affected�
