Preparation and handling of slime: the health authorities call for continued vigilance

ANSES, the DGS and the DGCCRF are reiterating the risks associated with preparing and handling "slime", a sticky and elastic putty for kneading that is very popular with children and adolescents. The repeated and prolonged handling of this putty can cause skin irritations and allergies that are sometimes severe. From January to May 2018, the number of reported cases was double the number for all of 2017.

Relevance of new scientific information (Santos‐Vigil et al., 2018*) in relation to the risk assessment of genetically modified crops with Cry1Ac

Published on: Wed, 14 Nov 2018 Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA assessed the scientific publication by Santos‐Vigil et al. (2018). The outstanding question was whether or not the new scientific information contains elements that could lead the EFSA GMO Panel to reconsider the outcome of its previous risk assessments on genetically modified crops expressing Cry1Ac protein. Santos‐Vigil et al. (2018) investigated the allergenic potential and immunological effects of the Cry1Ac protei...

Seaweed consumption: remain vigilant to the risk of excess iodine intake

Seaweed consumption: remain vigilant to the risk of excess iodine intake

Over the last few years, seaweed has become increasingly common on our plates. Fresh, dried or as a food supplement, its iodine content varies and can sometimes be high. ANSES assessed the risk of excess iodine intake from the consumption of seaweed-based products. In view of the non-negligible risk of exceeding the upper limit of safe intake for iodine, the Agency advises against the consumption of seaweed and seaweed-based food supplements by certain at-risk populations, and recommends that regular con...

Apricot kernels pose a risk of cyanide poisoning

Apricot kernels pose a risk of cyanide poisoning

A familiar ingredient for jam-makers, apricot kernels are increasingly being consumed as a natural remedy for their claimed "anti-cancer" properties. While one kernel added to perfume several jars of jam is not a problem, ingesting them in large quantities exposes consumers to the risk of cyanide poisoning. ANSES has identified several cases of apricot kernel poisoning in France through its toxicovigilance scheme, and encourages consumers to exercise caution.

ANSES recommends that certain populations avoid the consumption of food supplements containing melatonin

Under the national nutrivigilance scheme, reports of adverse effects likely to be associated with the consumption of food supplements containing melatonin have been brought to the attention of ANSES. A retrospective analysis of these reports, combined with the considerable level of consumption of this type of supplement, led ANSES to conduct an assessment of the potential health risks. In its Opinion of February 2018, the Agency highlighted the existence of populations and situations at risk, for which t...

HeartMate 3™ Left Ventricular Assist System: Class I Recall - Due to Potential Malfunction that may Lead to Graft Occlusion

The class I recall is due to a malfunction in the device’s outflow graft assembly that may cause the outflow graft to twist and close up (occlusion) over time. Occlusion of the outflow graft can reduce or stop pump flow and set off a persistent low flow alarm in the system. A reduction in pump can lead to serious adverse events such as blood clots and death.
