WHAT CILOXAN ® EYE OINTMENT IS USED FOR CILOXAN ® Eye Ointment contains the active ingredient ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride is a “fluoroquinolone” antibiotic. CILOXAN ® Eye Ointment is used to treat certain types of eye infections caused by bacteria. Your doctor will usually prescribe CILOXAN ® Eye Ointment because you have either: • an ulcer on the surface of your eye (corneal ulcer), or • a type of eye infections called bacterial conjunctivitis or blepharitis. _ _ CILOXAN ® (CIPROFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE) 3MG/G EYE OINTMENT NAME OF MEDICINE CILOXAN ® (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) 3mg/g Eye Ointment PRESENTATION CILOXAN Eye Ointment contains the equivalent of 3 mg/g ciprofloxacin base, and have been formulated as a sterile, multiple-dose product, for topical ophthalmic use. CILOXAN Eye Ointment also contains mineral oil and white petrolatum. USES ACTIONS Ciprofloxacin has _in vitro_ activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, possessing the greatest antibacterial activity of all quinolones. The bactericidal action of ciprofloxacin results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase which is needed for the synthesis of bacterial DNA. Ciprofloxacin has been shown to be active against most strains of the following organisms both _in vitro_ and in clinical infections (see INDICATIONS): Gram-Positive:_ _ _Staphylococcus aureus_ (including methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains) _Staphylococcus epidermidis _ _Streptococcus pneumoniae_ Viridans group of _Streptococcus_ Gram-Negative:_ _ _Pseudomonas aeruginosa _ _Serratia marcescens _ _Haemophilus influenzae_ Other Organisms: Most strains of _Pseudomonas cepacia_ and some strains of _Pseudomonas _ _maltophilia_ are resistant to ciprofloxacin as are most anaerobic bacteria, including _Bacteroides fragilis_ and _Clostridium difficile._ The minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) generally does not exceed the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) by more than a factor of 2.
