PIZACCORD 
15 mg, 30 mg and 45 mg Tablets 

The active ingredient in PIZACCORD tablets is pioglitazone as pioglitazone 
hydrochloride. Chemically, pioglitazone hydrochloride is [(±)-5-[[4-[2-(5-ethyl-2-
pyridinyl)ethoxy]phenyl]methyl]-2,4-] thiazolidinedione hydrochloride. The empirical 
formula is C

S•HCl which corresponds to a molecular weight of 392.90 
daltons. 

The CAS number for pioglitazone HCl is 112529-15-4. The CAS number for 
pioglitazone free base is 111025-46-8. 
DESCRIPTION 
Pioglitazone is an odourless, white crystalline powder that is soluble in N,N-
dimethylformamide, slightly soluble in anhydrous ethanol, very slightly soluble in 
acetone and acetonitrile, practically insoluble in water and insoluble in ether. 

Each tablet contains 15, 30 or 45 mg of pioglitazone (as pioglitazone hydrochloride). 
The tablets also contain hydroxypropylcellulose, carmellose calcium, lactose 
monohydrate and magnesium stearate. 

PIZACCORD 15 mg tablets are round, white, biconvex, uncoated tablets embossed 
with ‘PIO’ on one side and ‘15’ on the other side. PIZACCORD 30 mg tablets are 
round, white, flat, uncoated tablets embossed with ‘PIO’ on one side and ‘30’ on the 
other side. PIZACCORD 45 mg tablets are round, white, flat, uncoated tablets 
embossed with ‘PIO’ on one side and ‘45’ on the other side. 

Do not halve the tablets. Dose equivalence when a tablet is divided has not been 
established 
PHARMACOLOGY 
Pioglitazone is an oral antidiabetic agent that acts primarily by decreasing insulin 
resistance. Pharmacological studies indicate that pioglitazone improves sensitivity to 
insulin in muscle and adipose tissue and inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis. 
Pioglitazone improves glycaemic control while reducing ci
