Funaicide Resistance Warning

ZEE-MIL 250 WP is a member of the Phenylamide group of fungicides. For

fungicide resistance management ZEE-MIL 250 WP is a Group D fungicide.

Some naturally occurring individual fungi resistant to ZEE-MIL 250 WP and other

Group D fungicides may exist through normal genetic variability in any

fungal

population. The resistant individuals can eventually dominate the fungi population if

these fungicides are used repeatedly. These resistant fungi will not be controlled by

ZEE-MIL 250 WP and other Group D fungicides, thus resulting in a reduction in

efficacy and possible yield loss.

Since the occurrence of resistant fungi is difficult to detect prior to use, United

Phosphorus Ltd accepts no liability for any losses that may result from the failure of

ZEE-MIL 250 WP to control resistant fungi.

PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE, FISH, CRUSTACEA AND ENVIRONMENT: DO NOT

contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the chemical or used containers.

STORAGE AND DISPOSAL: Store in the closed, original container in a dry, cool,

well ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Single rinse before disposal. Add rinsings

to spray tank. Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on-site. Dispose of at a local

authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500mm in a

disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways,

desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should not be

burnt.

SAFETY DIRECTIONS:

Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not inhale dust or

spray mist.

FIRST AID:

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. If

swallowed, and if more than 15 minutes from a hospital, induce vomiting, preferably

using Ipecac Syrup APF.

ll HEALTH HAZARD DATA

Health Effects:

No specific data is available for the product for chronic exposure symptoms. The ingredients are not listed as

carcinogenic in Worksafe’s document “Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational

Environment” (May 1995). Available studies of the carcinogenicity of metalaxyl are inconclusive.

Chronic toxicity: A 90-day study of rats exposed to 0.1 to 2.5 mg/kg/day in diet, showed some cellular enlargement in

the liver at the highest dose. In a similar study with dogs fed diets of approximately 0.04 to 0.8 mg/kg/day for 6 months,

the dogs were adversely affected by the highest dose. Manifestations included increased blood alkaline phosphatase

and increased liver-to-brain weight ratio.

Reproductive effects: A three-generation rat study where animals were fed up to 2.5 mg/kg/day showed no compound

related maternal toxicity or reproductive effects. These data suggest that metalaxyl is unlikely to cause reproductive

effects.

Teratogenic effects: Rats given a dosage of 120 mg/kg/day by stomach tube on days 6 to 15 of gestation exhibited no

embryotoxicity or teratogenicity, nor did rabbits given a dosage of 20 mg/kg/day by the same route on days 6 to 18.

These data suggest that metalaxyl is not teratogenic.

Mutagenic effects: Studies including a dominant lethal assay in male mice indicate that metalaxyl has no mutagenic

potential.

Organ toxicity: The liver is the primary target organ for metalaxyl in animal systems.

Acute Effects:

Rabbits exhibited slight eye and skin irritation, but guinea pigs displayed no sensitization after metalaxyl exposure [1].

No information was available regarding the inhalation toxicity of metalaxyl.

Swallowed: Data suggests that this product should present no significant problems to typical persons if used as

intended.

Eye: Data suggests that this product should present no significant problems to typical persons if used as intended.

Skin: Data suggests that this product should present no significant problems to typical persons if used as intended.

Inhalation: Data suggests that this product should present no significant problems to typical persons if used as

intended.

For metalaxyl, the active ingredient:

Oral (Rat) = 669mg/kg

Dermal (Rat) >3100mg/kg

Effects on birds: Metalaxyl is reported to be practically nontoxic to birds.

Effects on aquatic organisms: Metalaxyl is practically nontoxic to freshwater fish. The 96-hour LC

values in rainbow

trout, carp, and bluegill are all above 100 mg/L. Freshwater aquatic invertebrates are slightly more susceptible to

metalaxyl. Daphnia magna, a small freshwater crustacean, has an LC

of 12.5 to 28 mg/L, depending on the product

formulation. This indicates that metalaxyl is harmful to this organism. There is little tendency for metalaxyl to

accumulate in the edible portion of fish. Metalaxyl did not accumulate beyond seven times the background

concentration and it was quickly eliminated after exposed fish were placed in fresh (metalaxyl-free) water.

Metalaxyl is nontoxic to bees.

First Aid:

Ipecac Syrup APF should be available in the area where product is used, or in a nearby unlocked medicine cabinet.

If poisoning occurs, contact a Doctor or Poisons Information Centre.

If swallowed, and if more than 15 minutes from a hospital, induce vomiting, preferably using Ipecac Syrup APF.

Eyes: If product gets in eyes, wash eyes to remove material. No further measures should normally be required.

Skin: If product gets on skin, wash skin to remove material. No further measures should normally be required.

Inhalation: No first aid measures normally required. However, if vapours or dusts have been inhaled, and irritation has

developed, remove to fresh air and observe until recovered. If irritation becomes painful or persists more than about 30

minutes, seek medical advice.

Advice to Doctor: Treat symptomatically. Note the nature of this product.

lll PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Exposure Standards:

A time weighted average (TWA) concentration for an 8 hour day, and 5 day week has not been established by

Worksafe Australia for any of the major ingredients in this product. There is a blanket limit of 10mg/m

for dusts or mists

when limits have not otherwise been established. The nature of this product makes it unlikely that this level will be

approached in normal use. The ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for metalaxyl is set at 0.03mg/kg/day. The corresponding

NOEL (No-observable-effect-level) is set at 3mg/kg/day. Values taken from Australian ADI List, May 1995.

Engineering Controls:

In industrial situations, concentration values below the TWA value should be maintained. Values may be reduced by

process modification, use of local exhaust ventilation, capturing substances at the source, or other methods. If you

believe air borne concentrations of mists, dusts or vapours are high, you are advised to modify the process or

environment to reduce the problem.

Personal Protection:

Respiratory Protection: It is usually safe to not use a dust mask or respirator protection on account of this product.

However, if the product is being used in dusty or confined conditions, use of a mask or respirator may be preferred. For

help in selecting suitable equipment, consult AS/NZS 1715.

Protective Gloves: Protective gloves are not normally necessary when using this product. However, it is always prudent

to wear gloves. For help in selecting suitable equipment, consult AS 2161.

Eye Protection: Protective eyewear is not normally necessary when using this product. However, it is always prudent to

use protective eyewear. Consult AS1336 and AS/NZS 1337 for advice on Industrial Eye Protection.

Clothing: This product is essentially safe to use without special protective clothing. However, its use is recommended as

a good industrial practice. Consult AS2919 for advice on Industrial Clothing.

Safety Boots: Wearing safety boots in industrial situations is advisory. Consult AS/NZS2210 for advice on Occupational

Protective Footwear.

Always wash hands before smoking, eating or using the toilet. Wash contaminated clothing and other protective

equipment before storing or re-using.
