4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation Remove patient to fresh air, avoid becoming a casualty. Keep patient warm and

quiet. Resuscitate if necessary. Seek urgent medical assistance.

Ingestion Induce vomiting if swallowed and conscious by using Ipecac syrup or by

inserting finger down throat. Seek immediate medical assistance.

Skin Wash affected areas with copious quantities of water immediately.

Remove contaminated clothing and wash before re-use.

Procedures SPILLAGE: Wear appropriate protective clothing. Evacuate area and keep people

away and upwind. Carefully sweep up spills or vacuum up immediately, but avoid

creating a dust cloud. Call the Fire Brigade and tell them the material and

quantity. Avoid breathing dust and contact with skin and eyes.

CHRONIC EFFECTS: Several studies in pigs indicate that repeated oral doses of

3-Nitro-4-Hydroxy Phenyl Arsonic Acid (0.87-5.8 mg As/kg/day for 1 month) can

cause significant neurotoxicity. The main signs were muscle tremors, partial

paralysis, and seizures. (From HSDB 14-2-2003)

Nervous system effects involving the extremities may also occur (numbness,

tingling, weakness, poor co-ordination).

CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: There was no evidence of carcinogenic activity for male

or female mice fed diets containing 100 or 200 ppm of 3-Nitro-4-Hydroxy Phenyl

Arsonic Acid for 2 years.

Not listed as a carcinogen by ACGIH, WHO IARC, USA NIOSH, USA NTP, USA OSHA.

OTHER INFORMATION: Phenylarsonic compunds are the least toxic arsenic

compounds because of very limited metabolism and are utilized as feed

additives in swine and poultry rations. (Patty's Ind. Hyg. & Tox. 4th Ed.

1994.)

Studies in laying hens also indicate that the organoarsenical feed additive,

3-Nitro-4-Hydroxy Phenyl Arsonic Acid, accumulates significantly in eggs as

the level in the diet is increased.

Inhalation Toxic if inhaled. May be irritating to the respiratory tract.

Ingestion Toxic if swallowed.

Can cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Skin May cause skin irritation. May be harmful if absorbed through skin.

Eye May cause eye irritation.

Chronic Effects Repeated or prolonged skin or eye contact is likely to cause irritation.

May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause digestive tract disturbances.

May cause muscle tremors, partial paralysis, and seizures.
