What Mupicin is used for

It is used for the treatment of various

bacterial infections e.g. impetigo (bacterial

infection on skin surface), folliculitis

(inflammation of hair follicles) and

furunculosis (boils on the skin).

How Mupicin works

Mupirocin is an antibiotic, which inhibits

bacterial growth. It inhibits bacterial growth

in low concentrations but destroys bacterias

in high concentrations. In high

concentrations, it does have some activity

against stubborn germs.

Before you use Mupicin

- When you must not use it

If allergic to mupirocin or other

ingredients of Mupicin.

- Before you start to use it

If irritation occurs, treatment should be

stopped and appropriate treatment for the

infection be started. Prolonged use may

result in overgrowth of non-susceptible

organisms, including fungi. If impetigo

(bacterial infection on skin surface) has

not improved upon treatment, a doctor

should be consulted.

If ointment is used around the eyes,

caution should be exercised to avoid the

eyes. It should be used with caution in

moderate or severe kidney impairment.

- Taking other medicines

The medicine is for local application

and will usually have minimal effect on

other medication. However, please inform

the doctor or pharmacist if taking other

medicines.

How to use Mupicin

- How much to use

Apply a small amount over the affected

area up to 3 times daily, for up to 10 days.

The area may be covered with a dressing

or occluded if desired.

- When to use it

Always use Mupicin exactly as your

doctor has instructed you. You should

check with your doctor or pharmacist if

you are unsure.

- How long to use it

You should check with your doctor or

pharmacist.

- If you forget to use it

Apply as soon as you remember.

- If you use too much (overdose)

If use too much Mupicin, contact your

doctor, an emergency department or a

poison center immediately.

Irritation may occur if too much of

Mupicin is used.

While you are using Mupicin

- Things you must do

Inform doctor of medications you are

taking.

- Things you must not do

Never give this medicine to someone

else, it could harm them, even if their

symptoms seem the same.

- Things to be careful of

If you are pregnant or become pregnant

or breast-feeding during treatment, you

should not use Mupicin unless your doctor

tells you to. Your doctor will consider

about the potential benefits and risks of

your treatment.

Side effects

This ointment is usually well tolerated but

local reactions such as burning, stinging and

itching may occur after application.

You may report any side effects or adverse

Store in cool, dry place below 30

Protect from light. Keep out of reach of

children.
