In postmenopausal women, estrogens are produced primarily from the conversion of androgens into estrogens through the aromatase enzyme in peripheral tissues. Estrogen deprivation through aromatase inhibition is an effective and selective treatment for hormone dependent breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
