HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

HEALTH EFFECTS

ACUTE EFFECTS

SWALLOWED

Slightly toxic.

EYE

May cause irritation.

SKIN

Mildly irritating to skin.

If substantial skin contact occurs it could cause facial numbness.

INHALED

Little inhalation hazard due to water base.

CHRONIC EFFECTS

Animal studies indicate repeated or prolonged exposure to alpha-cypermethrin can act on the nervous system

and produce excitatory effects predominantly on the sensory nerve endings. Chronic feeding studies on

animals do not indicate any cumulative toxicity and show that the compound is neither a carcinogen nor a

teratogen.

FIRST AID

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Telephone 131126 Australia-wide.

EYE

Hold eyes open, flood with water for 15 minutes and see a doctor.

SKIN

Remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.

In common with other synthetic pyrethroids, this product may cause abnormal sensations in the skin, especially

the face (facial paresthesia) variously experienced as a numbness or tingling sensation or even severe pain

which usually does not persist beyond 24 hours. It has been established that topical application of olive oil to

the affected area will afford prompt relief. (This remedy is more effective if the affected area is washed with

soap and water and then dried, before application of olive oil.)

INHALED

Inhalation is not normally harmful.

ADVICE TO DOCTOR

FASTAC Insecticide contains alpha-cypermethrin a synthetic pyrethroid. Treat symptomatically. In case of

ingestion, consider gastric lavage within 4 hours. In case of gross over-exposure, subject should be kept under

observation as indicated by his/her condition. Convulsions should be treated with anticonvulsants.

MSDS -FASTAC Xcel INSECTICIDE

MEDICAL CONDITION AGGRAVATED BY OVEREXPOSURE:

Over-exposure may cause local irritation of the skin (burning sensation on the face and elsewhere) and

irritation of the respiratory tract causing rhinorrhea, chest tightness or dyspnea.

TOXICITY

Acute Toxicity LD

50 ( mg / kg )

Rat Oral 2291

Rat Dermal > 2000

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

EXPOSURE LIMITS

None established.

ENGINEERING CONTROLS

Do NOT inhale spray mist.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

When handling any chemicals, formulation operators must wear overalls, approved safety boots, gloves, eye

protection and masks. Avoid breathing any dust and contact with the skin or clothing. In the event of any

bodily contact, the affected area must be washed immediately with copious quantities of water and

contaminated clothing removed.

When charging TGAC material, operator must wear tyvec suit, air hood and gloves. Extraction hood must be

on and operator should change overalls and shower immediately after charging.

Formulated product is harmful if swallowed. May irritate the eyes and skin. Facial skin contact may cause

temporary facial numbness. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Avoid inhaling spray mist. When preparing

spray, wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist and a washable hat and elbow-length PVC gloves.

Wash hands after use. After each day's use, wash gloves and contaminated clothing.

FLAMMABILITY

Not flammable.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area. Do NOT store for prolonged periods in

direct sunlight.

Ensure containers are correctly labelled and securely sealed.

Eye-wash and washing facilities must be readily available.

For decontaminating and disposing spills, have lime, soda ash, absorbent material and open head drums on

hand.

SPILLS AND DISPOSAL

In formulation, unless otherwise directed, powder spill should be swept and placed in a plastic bag and

disposed of as solid waste. Area should be mopped down with water and diluted sodium hypochlorite.

Spillage of liquids should be absorbed into clay or sand and treated as a powder spill.

MSDS -FASTAC Xcel INSECTICIDE

Clear area of all unprotected personnel for formulated product spills. Wear full protective equipment including

breathing apparatus. Stop leak if safe to do so by manoeuvring the container. Decant leaking container into a

clean empty drum remote from the storage area and label. If leaking container can be repacked, contact BASF

Australia Ltd, so that an overdrum and transport for return to a nominated BASF location can be arranged.

Do NOT flush to drains or sewers. Do NOT contaminate streams, rivers or water courses.

Absorb formulated product spill in lime or wet area with 5% soda ash (sodium carbonate) solution and absorb

on sand, earth or non-combustible absorbent material. Place material in open top drum, clean up with small

amount of detergent and water, absorb and place in drum. Scatter lime over the area and leave for 1 hour.

Decompose contaminated absorbent and surplus material with 5% soda ash solution. Leave in a safe place for

one month. Seal drum and bury in an area approved by the local waste disposal authority.

Soak protective equipment in 5% soda ash solution for at least 24 hours. Rinse and dry. Wash overalls.

For end-users: Drain empty container into sprayer. Triple or preferably pressure rinse containers before

disposal. Add rinsings to spray tank. Do NOT dispose of undiluted chemicals on-site. If recycling, replace cap

and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point.

If not recycling, break, crush, or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is

available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose

clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should NOT be burnt.

FIRE/EXPLOSION HAZARD

Decomposition may give rise to toxic and noxious fumes. Alcohol resistant foam, carbon dioxide or dry

chemical extinguishers are required. Ensure respiratory equipment is available.

Evacuate immediate area. Advise Fire Brigade of nature of hazard. Wear full protective equipment, including

breathing apparatus. Remove drums from site of fire, if possible, as overheating may cause some of the drums

to explode. Cool surrounding containers with a fine water spray.

Avoid contact of water with material as toxic run-off will form. In this event, consideration should be given to

allowing the fire to burn out. Contain run-off.

OTHER INFORMATION

PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE, FISH, CRUSTACEANS AND ENVIRONMENT

Dangerous to fish. Do NOT contaminate ponds, waterways or drains with FASTAC Xcel Insecticide or used

containers.
