hydrochloride which is contained in Drixine No Drip Formula nasal sprays.

This leaflet answers some common questions about Drixine nasal sprays. It does not

contain all of the available information. It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or

pharmacist.

What Drixine Nasal Sprays are used for

Drixine nasal sprays contain oxymetazoline hydrochloride. Oxymetazoline is a nasal

decongestant that clears blocked noses.

Drixine nasal sprays are used to relieve nasal congestion associated with common cold and

flu, hayfever, allergies and sinusitis. Drixine nasal sprays provide 12 hours relief.

Drixine nasal sprays can be used in adults and children aged six and over.

Your doctor or pharmacist, however, may have given you a Drixine nasal spray for another

purpose.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about why this medicine has

been given to you.

Drixine nasal sprays can be bought without a doctor’s prescription.

Before you use Drixine Nasal Spray

When you must not use it

Do not use Drixine nasal spray if:

you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance oxymetazoline

hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet

you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or have taken them in the last two

weeks. MAO inhibitors are used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and

depression, and may increase the hypertensive effects of oxymetazoline.

you have narrow angle glaucoma

you have had trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy (trans-nasal surgery)

you have inflammation of the skin and mucosa of the nasal vestibule and

encrustation (rhinitis sicca)

you have acute coronary disease or cardiac asthma

you have severe hypertension (high blood pressure)

Do not use Drixine nasal spray in children under 6 years of age (see section How to take

Drixine nasal spray)

Do not use Drixine nasal spray after the expiry date printed on the pack.

Do not use Drixine nasal spray if the packaging is torn or shows signs of tampering.

If you are not sure whether you should start using Drixine nasal spray, talk to your

doctor or pharmacist.

Before you start to use it

Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have:

coronary artery disease

high blood pressure (hypertension)

overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

diabetes mellitus

difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate gland

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product in children 6 –11 years.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should only use

Drixine nasal spray during pregnancy or breast feeding if recommended by your doctors.

If you have not told your doctor or pharmacist about any of the above, do so before

you take Drixine nasal spray.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including

medicines that you buy without a prescription from a pharmacy, supermarket or health

food shop.

The hypertensive effects of oxymetazoline may increase when used together with some

types of antidepressants:

tricyclic antidepressants

maprotiline

monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors)

Consult a doctor or pharmacist before using Drixine nasal spray if you use any of the

medicines listed above (see also 'Do not use Drixine nasal spray’ section), or if you re taking

any other cough and cold medicines.

Your doctor or pharmacist has more information on medicines to be careful with or avoid

while taking Drixine nasal spray.

How to use Drixine No Drip Formula Nasal Spray

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and pharmacist carefully.

They may differ from the information contained in this leaflet.

If you do not understand the instructions on the pack, ask your doctor or pharmacist

for help.

Do not exceed the recommended dose.

How long to use it

Drixine nasal spray should not be used for longer than 3 days. Frequent use of use over

longer period may cause nasal congestion to recur or worsen. Contact your doctor or

pharmacist if symptoms worsen or do not improve after 3 days

How to use it

Shake well before use.

Before using the first time remove the protective cap from the tip and prime

metered pump by depressing pump firmly several times.

Blow nose gently to clear.

To spray, hold bottle with thumb at base and nozzle between first and second

fingers. Without tilting head, insert nozzle into nostril.

Fully depress rim with a firm, even stroke 2 – 3 sprays in each nostril and inhale

deeply.

If you forget to take it

Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you missed.

If you are not sure what to do, ask your doctor or pharmacist

If you have trouble remembering to take your medicine, ask your pharmacist for some hints

If you take too much (overdose)

Immediately telephone your doctor or the National Poisons Information Centre (0800

POISON or 0800 764 766) for advice or go to your nearest Accident and Emergency

Centre if you think you or anyone else may have taken too much Drixine nasal spray.

Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.

You may need urgent medical attention.

While you are taking Drixine Nasal Spray

Things you must do

Tell all doctors, dentists and pharmacists who are treating you that you are taking

Drixine nasal spray.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you become pregnant while you are taking Drixine

nasal spray, or if you are breastfeeding.

Things you must not do

Do not give Drixine nasal spray to anyone else, even if their symptoms seem similar to

yours.

Do not give it to children under 6 years of age.

Do not give it to children 6 - 11 years of age without medical advice.

Do not use it to treat any other complaints unless your doctor or pharmacist says to.

Side effects

Tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you do not feel well while you

are using Drixine nasal spray.

Drixine nasal spray helps most people, but it may have unwanted effects in a few people.

Like other medicines, Drixine nasal spray can cause some side effects. If they occur, they

are most likely to be minor and temporary.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist to answer any questions you may have.

Stop using oxymetazoline and seek medical help immediately if you have any of the

following which may be signs of an allergic reaction:

difficulty breathing or swallowing

swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

severe itching of the skin, with a red rash or raised bumps

Other possible side effects are:

Uncommon: sneezing, dryness or irritation in the nose, mouth or throat.

Rare: anxiety, fatigue, irritability, disturbed sleep in children, rapid heartbeat, palpitations,

raised blood pressure, blocked nose, swelling of the nasal lining, headache, nausea,

flushing, rash and visual disturbances.

In addition, some of the ingredients in Drixine nasal sprays can cause side effects.

Benzalkonium chloride (a preservative) is an irritant and may cause skin reactions.

Propylene glycol may cause skin irritation.

Other unwanted effects may also occur in some people taking Drixine nasal spray. Tell your

doctor or pharmacist if you notice any other effects.

Do not be alarmed by this list of possible side effects. You may not experience any of

them.

After using Drixine Nasal Spray

Storage

Keep your spray in the original package until it is time to take it.

After each use wipe the nozzle. Replace the cap firmly.

Store below 25ºC.

Do not store Drixine nasal spray or any other medicine in the bathroom, or near a sink,

or on a window sill. Do not leave it in the car on hot days.

Heat and dampness can destroy some medicines.

Keep Drixine nasal spray where children cannot reach it.

A locked cupboard at least one-and-a-half meters above the ground is a good place to store

medicines.

Disposal

If your doctor or pharmacist tells you to stop taking this medicine or its expiry date

has passed, ask your pharmacist what to do with it.
