HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

First Aid Measures

Swallowed:

Eye:

Skin:

Inhaled:

For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor.

Where Medical attention is not immediately available or where the

patient is more than 15 minutes from a hospital or unless instructed

otherwise:

If conscious, give water to drink. INDUCE vomiting with fingers down

the back of the throat, ONLY IF CONSCIOUS. Lean patient forward

or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain

open airway and prevent aspiration.

NOTE: Wear a protective glove when inducing vomiting by

mechanical means. In the mean time, qualified first-aid personnel

should treat the patient following observation and employing

supportive measures as indicated by the patient's condition.

If the services of a medical officer or medical doctor are readily

available, the patient should be placed in his/her care and a copy of

the MSDS should be provided. Further action will be the

responsibility of the medical specialist. If medical attention is not

available on the worksite or surroundings send the patient to a

hospital together with a copy of the MSDS.

If this product comes in contact with the eyes:

Immediately hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with

running water. Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping

eyelids apart and away from eye and moving the eyelids by

occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Continue flushing until

advised to stop by the Poisons Information Centre or a doctor, or for

at least 15 minutes. Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury

should only be undertaken by skilled personnel.

If skin contact occurs:

Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available).

Seek medical attention in event of irritation.

Remove affected person from further exposure. Keep at rest until

fully recovered.

Acute Effects

Swallowed:

Eye:

Skin:

Inhaled:

Chronic Effects

Acute selenium poisoning produces nervousness, convulsions,

drowsiness, frontal headaches and in extreme cases, death from

respiratory depression. Skin eruptions, lassitude, gastrointestinal

disturbance and discolouration of teeth are also symptomatic of

selenium intoxication. An odourous garlic breath and partial loss of

hair and nails may also indicate over-exposure. The gastrointestinal

absorption of selenium (as selenites, selenates or seleniferous

compounds) is rapid. Most absorbed selenium is complexed by

plasma protein and is subsequently deposited in the liver and

kidneys. Excretion is by urine, faeces, sweat and breath. The major

urinary metabolite is probably trimethylselenonium ion. Selenates

(and to a lesser degree selenites) are general protoplasmic poisons

attacking sulfhydryl enzymes. As with arsenic they cause

degenerative lesions of the kidney, heart, spleen, stomach, and

bowels. Accidental exposure of several female laboratory workers to

selenite resulted in several miscarriages; this result is equivocal as

epidemiological studies actually suggest that neonatal deaths

declined as environmental selenium rose.

Non-irritant in solid form. If pellets are broken, may be a moderate

irritant due to particulate material. Avoid contact with eyes.

The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or skin

irritation following contact (as classified by EC Directives using

animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that

exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in

an occupational setting. Entry into the blood stream, through, for

example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury

with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material

and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected.

Unlikely to be a risk due to the solid nature of the product

No evidence of any long-term effects

Advice to Doctor:

Treat symptomatically. Show this MSDS to the Doctor

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Exposure Standards:

Engineering Controls:

Personal Protection:

Flammability:

Selenium has a TWA of 0.2 mg/m

. There have however been no

reports of disabling disease or death from industrial exposures. The

recommended TLV-TWA is thought to provide protection against

systemic toxicity and minimise the potential for ocular and upper

respiratory tract irritation. IARC have classified selenium and its

compounds as Group 3: Not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to

humans.

Not normally required due to the nature of the product

Wear protective gloves when handling. Always wash hands before

smoking, eating, or using the toilet.

Non-combustible solid product.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

Storage & Transport:

Spills/Disposal:

Fire/Explosion Hazard:

Ecological/Environmental:

Store in original container in a cool place, out of direct sunlight.

Store away from food, drink, and animal feedstuffs. The product is

not classified as a Dangerous Good for the purpose of rail and road

transport.

Collect and seal in drums for disposal. If pellets are broken and dust

is generated, wear protective equipment to prevent inhalation of dust

particles. Dispose of unused product in accordance with State Land

Waste Management Authority

Non-combustible solid product. On heating, toxic fumes of selenium

will be generated. Fire fighters should wear self-contained breathing

apparatus if risk of exposure to vapour or products of combustion

exists.

Refer to the Environmental Protection Authority.

DO NOT dispose of into sewers or waterways. Puncture containers

to prevent re-use and bury at an authorised landfill.
